About the role

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and looking to make a meaningful impact in your career? We're seeking a dedicated Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery Technician to join our team at Palmerston North City Council.

As a Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of our resident animals at Central Energy Trust Wildbase Recovery and Victoria Esplanade Aviaries. From daily care routines to health monitoring and aviary maintenance, you'll contribute to maintaining world-class standards and creating engaging experiences for visitors.

This is a full-time role, 40 hours per week, Tuesday – Saturday OR Sunday - Thursday

Your focus in this role will include:

  • Execute daily care routines for the residents
  • Implement husbandry practices, including feeding, cleaning enclosures, and providing enriching activities.
  • Conduct regular health checks for the Residents and the Victoria Esplanade Aviary collection, working with veterinarians for necessary follow-up treatment.
  • Coordinate and execute aviary maintenance routines to ensure a clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records, including records for and individuals and flock collections held.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a positive visitor experience by creating an interactive and educational atmosphere.

To excel in this role, you should possess the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor of Science, Zoology, Veterinary Technology, or Veterinary Nursing Qualification, or equivalent
  • Practical experience in wildlife care or captive animal management and handling and caring for a variety of wildlife, including birds and reptiles is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with New Zealand's native wildlife and their specific needs is highly desirable.
  • Have an understanding/willingness to learn about te ao māori and tikanga
  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with volunteers, collaborating with veterinarians, and providing information to the public during educational programs.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems for record-keeping and data management.
