Management Accountant
MAS - Medical Assurance Society
Remote
We're looking for an experienced Management Accountant to join our Finance team and help deliver accurate reporting, robust financial controls and meaningful financial insights across MAS. This is a permanent position and can be based in either our Wellington or Auckland office.
This is a broad role that combines financial and management accounting, budgeting and forecasting, statutory and regulatory reporting, technical accounting, and business partnering.
You'll work closely with leaders across MAS, helping them understand financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, and make well-informed decisions.
If you enjoy working across both the detail and the bigger picture, this is an opportunity to make a visible contribution within a purpose-led New Zealand organisation.
About the role
Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll be responsible for developing, managing and delivering a comprehensive range of financial accounting, reporting and management accounting services.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and analysing monthly financial results, including identifying trends, risks and opportunities
- Producing accurate and timely management reports, Executive reporting and Board papers
- Supporting budgeting, forecasting and financial planning processes
- Monitoring performance against budgets and forecasts, investigating variances and recommending appropriate actions
- Preparing annual financial statements and supporting working papers
- Leading statutory returns and regulatory reporting requirements
- Researching, interpreting and applying accounting standards and technical accounting guidance
- Preparing financial models, business cases and cost-benefit analysis
- Coordinating external audit activities and acting as a key contact for auditors
- Maintaining effective financial controls and supporting strong financial governance
- Partnering with leaders across MAS to provide commercially focused financial advice
- Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, systems, controls and reporting
You'll also contribute to Finance projects and continuous improvement initiatives as the team continues to evolve its business partnering capability.
What you'll bring
You'll be a capable accounting professional who can produce accurate work, manage competing priorities and explain financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance audiences.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, commerce or a related discipline
- A CA, CPA or equivalent professional accounting qualification, or be actively working towards one
- At least three to five years' experience in financial accounting, management accounting, audit or commercial finance
- Experience preparing financial reports, budgets, forecasts and reconciliations
- Strong financial analysis skills and the ability to turn information into practical insights and recommendations
- Knowledge of accounting standards, statutory reporting requirements and financial governance
- Experience supporting annual financial statements and audit processes
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and experience using financial reporting or ERP systems
- Strong attention to detail, professional judgement and problem-solving capability
- The ability to build trusted relationships and work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders
Experience in financial services, insurance, a mutual or another regulated environment would be valuable. Experience supporting Executive or Board reporting, working within a Big Four or comparable professional services environment, or contributing to finance transformation would also be advantageous.
