Software Consultant – Test Automation

ASB Bank

Remote

Location: Albany, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

Quality engineering is critical to keeping banking technology secure, reliable and ready to change. As ASB continues to modernise the platforms that support essential banking services, we are looking for an experienced test automation specialist who can help us improve how quality is designed, automated and embedded throughout delivery.

This is an opportunity to influence test automation at an enterprise level. You will shape strategy, establish modern automation frameworks and help teams improve quality across the full software development lifecycle. Your work will support critical platforms spanning areas such as transactional banking, trade banking, treasury and trading.

The role combines strategic thinking with hands-on technical delivery. You will have the scope to introduce practical improvements, explore responsible uses of AI in testing, and help create simpler, faster and more reliable ways of delivering change.

About The Team

You will join ASB’s Core Tribe, which supports and evolves technology that underpins important banking services and internal operations. The environment includes complex enterprise applications and platforms such as SAP, Trade360 and Calypso. You will work across technical teams to strengthen automation capability, improve engineering practices and help ensure changes are delivered safely and efficiently.

About The Role

As a Software Consultant specialising in test automation, you will provide technical direction and hands-on expertise across the Tribe. You will develop an automation-first testing strategy, identify opportunities to improve existing automation, and design frameworks that can support multiple services and applications.

The role exists to lift quality engineering capability across the end-to-end delivery lifecycle. You will work with engineers, testers and other stakeholders to embed automation into delivery pipelines, improve test coverage and provide clear evidence of quality, risk and outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a test automation strategy across critical enterprise services and applications.
  • Assess existing testing approaches and identify where new or improved automation will provide the greatest value.
  • Design and build scalable automation frameworks using appropriate open-source and licensed tools.
  • Write, maintain and optimise automated test suites for user interfaces, APIs, integrations and backend services.
  • Integrate automated testing into continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines.
  • Execute automated tests, analyse results and support teams to identify defects, risks and performance issues.
  • Configure safe, repeatable test environments using tools such as virtual machines, simulators and automation frameworks.
  • Explore responsible uses of AI to support test artefact creation, test data generation and automation development.
  • Translate functional and technical requirements into effective testing approaches and test scripts.
  • Improve efficiency, consistency and traceability across the end-to-end testing lifecycle.
  • Maintain clear documentation covering test strategies, plans, frameworks, methods, results and technical decisions.
  • Provide meaningful reporting and insights that help stakeholders understand quality, risk and delivery readiness.
  • Champion DevSecOps, automation-first delivery and continuous improvement practices across the Tribe.

About You

You are an experienced quality engineering or test automation professional who can move comfortably between strategy and hands-on delivery. You know how to take a complex testing environment, identify where change will have the most impact and turn that into practical solutions teams can adopt.

You will enjoy building capability rather than simply executing an established process. You are proactive, comfortable working through ambiguity and confident influencing technical decisions. You communicate clearly, bring others with you and remain focused on secure, sustainable outcomes rather than automation for its own sake.

Core Requirements

Key Skills & Experience

  • Extensive experience in software testing, including significant enterprise-level test automation experience.
  • Proven experience designing and implementing automation-first testing strategies across the software development lifecycle.
  • Hands-on experience building automation frameworks from the ground up.
  • Strong experience with open-source automation frameworks such as Selenium or Playwright.
  • Experience with licensed automation tools such as Tricentis Tosca or TestComplete.
  • Experience building behaviour-driven development frameworks and associated test suites.
  • Strong API, backend service and integration testing experience.
  • Working knowledge of C# and .NET development.
  • Hands-on DevOps experience, ideally using Azure DevOps.
  • A strong understanding of continuous integration, continuous delivery, DevSecOps and modern software delivery practices.
  • Strong analytical capability, including technical analysis and requirements interpretation.
  • Clear technical writing skills, with experience producing strategies, framework documentation and design specifications.
  • The ability to influence technical teams and drive initiatives in a complex enterprise environment.

Nice to have

  • Experience applying AI-assisted tools or techniques to test design, test data generation or automation development.
  • Experience using Tricentis Tosca within a large enterprise environment.
  • Banking, insurance or fintech experience.
  • Experience automating tests for transactional banking, trade banking, treasury, trading or other regulated financial platforms.

Working for ASB

At ASB, You Will Have Access To

  • Flexible and hybrid ways of working.
  • Ongoing learning, career development and internal opportunities.
  • Discounted banking, insurance and a range of employee offers.
  • Health and wellbeing support, including Southern Cross Wellbeing One health insurance and mental wellbeing resources.
  • Lifestyle, volunteering and parental leave benefits.
  • An inclusive workplace that values different backgrounds, experiences and ways of thinking.
  • The opportunity to work on technology that supports customers, communities and New Zealand’s wider economy.

This is a senior opportunity to shape how test automation is approached across complex and important technology. You will have the freedom to influence strategy, build practical solutions and help teams improve the speed, safety and reliability of delivery.

If you are motivated by complex engineering challenges and want to leave behind stronger frameworks, better practices and more capable teams, we would like to hear from you.
