Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services:
- Environmental Regulation and Protection
- Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards
- Public Transport
Council plays an important role in responding to national legislation and policy changes – this mahi is part of our operating environment and is embedded in our everyday mahi. The current proposals from central government are significant, and Council is working through the opportunities and implications. However, our mahi must continue to deliver our three core services for our partners, communities and te taiao (environment).
Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role
As a Regional Park Field Ranger, you’ll enjoy being outdoors working in the field. This position involves delivering work programmes, and provides the chance to gain real hands-on experience enhancing our natural environment.
You’ll also contribute to our fire response commitment by forming part of the Environment Canterbury Rural Fire Team as required.

- Park maintenance tasks
- Ensure the safety of the public within our parks
- Public engagement
- Parks patrolling and public events
As our Ranger function requires a continuous presence, the role includes weekend work comprising maintenance and patrol duties in Northern Pegasus Bay and in the Waimakariri and Ashley/Rakahuri Regional Parks.

Mōu │ About You
You’ll have experience in and knowledge of fieldwork delivery, plus have practical experience “on tools” in field conditions. Local knowledge of the greater Christchurch area including its rivers, parks, and natural environment would be an advantage.

Ideally You Will Have
- Practical know-how and a “can do” attitude to get work done
- A high level of organisational skills
- The ability to work within timeframes and s olve problems as they arise
- Good communication skills
- A current clean class 1 drivers licence – class 2 and 4 is desirable
- The ability to work as part of a team
