Help English language learners build the academic skills and confidence they need to succeed in further tertiary study.
Skills Group is looking for an experienced English Language (Academic) Training Specialist to join our Academic Team at our Wiri campus. This full-time, 6-month fixed-term role will deliver and assess the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4).
You'll provide engaging face-to-face teaching, competency-based assessment, academic guidance, and pastoral support within a motivational and high-quality learning environment. Working closely with the Learning Support Manager and Learner Success teams, you'll play an important role in helping learners strengthen their academic reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills while preparing for further tertiary study.
What You'll Be Doing
- Deliver engaging face-to-face academic English classes across reading, writing, listening, and speaking
- Assess learner achievement against relevant NZQA mandatory unit standards using competency-based assessment methods
- Provide timely, constructive feedback, academic guidance, and pastoral support to help learners succeed
- Develop Individual Learning Plans while monitoring learner attendance, engagement, and academic progress
- Maintain accurate learner records in Selma, contribute to moderation activities, and use Learning Hive to support learning
- Ensure teaching, assessment, and learner support activities comply with NZQA requirements and organisational policies
What You'll Bring
- A recognised English language teaching qualification, such as exaCELTA, Trinity CertTESOL, DELTA, a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Teaching, or a Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related discipline
- Experience teaching NZCEL or English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes, particularly at Level 4 or against CEFR B2 descriptors
- Experience using learner-centred academic English teaching methods, including scaffolded writing, referencing, plagiarism instruction, presentations, debates, and integrated four-skills teaching
- Demonstrated capability assessing NZQA competency-based unit standards
- Hold NZQA assessor unit standards 4098 and 11551, with previous experience teaching international learners
- A passion for supporting learners, delivering high-quality education, and contributing to continuous improvement
