Data Engineer | Te Tauraki Limited
Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu
Te Tauraki Limited | Christchurch – Ōtautahi
Permanent | Full time
Build something that matters.
Te Tauraki is a subsidiary of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and operates as both an Iwi-Māori Partnership Board and a commissioning agency for Whānau Ora services across Te Waipounamu. Our purpose is simple but significant: supporting Whānau Māori living healthy lives.
We're looking for a Data Engineer to join our small but highly capable Data, Insights & Impact team.
This is not a traditional Data Engineer role. As a growing organisation with a relatively small team, you'll have the opportunity to work across the full data lifecycle - from designing data structures and building integrations, through to supporting reporting, analytics, visualisation, and data governance.
If you're someone who enjoys variety, likes solving real-world problems, and wants to see the direct impact of your work, this role offers a unique opportunity to help shape and mature an organisation's data environment from the ground up.
About The Role
Reporting to the Head of Data, Insights & Impact, you will be responsible for designing, building, maintaining, and continuously improving Te Tauraki data environment.
Working across a broad range of technologies and data sources, you'll transform information into trusted, accessible, and well-governed data assets that support operational delivery, reporting, evaluation, and strategic planning.
You'll play a critical role in improving data quality, reducing manual effort, strengthening reporting capability, and ensuring our data practices align with Māori data sovereignty principles and Ngāi Tahu values.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll contribute across a range of areas, including:
- Data Engineering & Warehousing
- Data Integration & Automation
- Analytics, Reporting & Business Intelligence
- Data Governance & Quality
- Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
About You
You're a technically capable and curious data professional who enjoys working across multiple disciplines rather than being confined to a single specialisation. You are comfortable operating in environments where you are able to turn complexity into practical, workable solutions.
You'll Likely Bring
- At least five years' experience in Data Engineering, Data Warehousing, Business Intelligence, Analytics Engineering, or a similar role.
- Strong SQL skills and experience building data models, pipelines, integrations, and reusable datasets.
- Experience with PostgreSQL administration, database design, security, and performance optimisation.
- Knowledge of the Azure data ecosystem, including services such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Azure Storage, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Key Vault.
- Experience working across multiple and often fragmented data sources.
- Exposure to Power BI and an understanding of how data structures support effective reporting and analytics.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a practical, delivery-focused mindset.
- The ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience working within the health, social sector, public sector, kaupapa Māori organisations, or with Māori data sovereignty principles would be highly regarded.
What Matters Most
Technical skills are important, but we're equally interested in how you work.
We're Looking For Someone Who
- Enjoys variety and learning new things.
- Takes ownership and follows problems through to resolution.
- Is comfortable getting hands-on and delivering practical outcomes.
- Thinks critically and systemically.
- Values high-quality documentation and well-governed data.
- Works collaboratively and builds strong relationships.
- Understands the importance of protecting sensitive information.
- Has an appreciation for te ao Māori and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for whānau Māori.
Join us
This is an opportunity to join a growing organisation where data is increasingly central to our decision-making, investment approaches, and impact.
You'll be part of a supportive team, have the opportunity to influence how things are done, and contribute to meaningful work that makes a difference for whānau across Te Waipounamu.
If you're looking for a role that combines technical challenge, variety, autonomy, and purpose, we'd love to hear from you.
