Software Engineer - AI Automation & LLM Systems

Software Engineer – AI Automation & LLM Systems

About Comply Copilot (Coco AI)

Land development, planning consultants waste weeks on consenting paperwork that should take days. We're building AI-native SaaS tools that automate document processing, compliance checks, and report generation – so they can focus on the work that actually matters.

We're industry-backed, hybrid-working, and growing fast. This is a founding-stage role with meaningful equity. You'll work directly with the founders, ship to real users weekly, and help build something that changes how an entire industry works.

Work setup: Hybrid (NZ-based) with 2-3 days/week in our Auckland office for co-working.

The Role – Software Engineer (AI Automation & LLMs)

As a software engineer focused on AI automation, you'll:

  • Build intelligent automation workflows – Design and ship systems that process emails, documents, and forms using LLMs to extract data, validate compliance, and trigger downstream actions
  • Own LLM integrations end-to-end – Work with OpenAI, Anthropic, and similar APIs to build production features including prompt engineering, RAG pipelines, and vector search
  • Ship user-facing AI features – Deploy workflow automation tools to planning consultants, gather feedback, and iterate based on real-world usage
  • Work directly with founders – Translate ambiguous user problems into simple, high-impact product decisions without needing a product manager
  • Contribute to technical foundations – Help establish patterns for data models, API design, and AI system architecture as the team grows

Your Background

Must have

  1. 4+ years of experience building and shipping production software, with strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript and a track record of owning features end-to-end
  2. Hands-on experience with modern AI/ML tooling – including LLMs, RAG, embeddings, prompt engineering, and proven ability to deploy AI features in production environments
  3. Experience building workflow automation – ideally processing emails, documents, or forms using LLMs to extract, validate, or route information
  4. Strong product intuition – able to translate ambiguous user problems into simple, shippable solutions without extensive hand-holding
  5. Legal right to work in New Zealand

Must be

  • Comfortable with ambiguity, rapid iteration, and extreme ownership
  • Outcome-focused (not ticket-focused)
  • A clear communicator who over-communicates rather than under-communicates
  • Startup-ready: high autonomy, fast learner, low ego

Our Delivery Ethos

You'll thrive if you like to:

  • Own outcomes – This is an equity role. You're a partner, not a contractor. You care about what gets delivered and whether it works for users – not just closing tickets.
  • Think in systems – You're a first-principles thinker. You strategise the big picture, break it into shippable pieces, deploy the first version, and iterate based on what you learn from users every week.
  • Ship fast – We deploy multiple times a day. You love tight feedback loops with users. No 6-month waterfalls, no endless planning docs. Build small, ship fast, learn, repeat.
  • Work with a high-functioning team – We're building something together. If you prefer working solo in a dark cupboard without checking in, we're not for you.

Technology Stack

Here's what we build with:

  • Database: Postgres
  • Backend: FastAPI (Python)
  • Frontend: React
  • APIs: REST
  • AI/LLMs: Production experience with OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or similar
  • Vector DB: Experience with RAG patterns and vector databases
  • Nice to have: Chakra UI, TanStack, experience with fine-tuning or inference optimisation

To Apply

Skip the cover letter. Just send us a one-page resume with your most recent places of work, job title, duration, and what you shipped that mattered (1–2 lines max).

Example:

  • Xero, Software Engineer, 2 years
  • Built the invoice reconciliation engine used by 50k businesses. Reduced processing time by 80% and cut support tickets by 40%.
