Seasonal Wool Handler

We are seeking Seasonal Wool Handlers in Invercargill. This is a fixed-term full-time Seasonal role required during the peak sheep processing and wool recovery season. The role is required from November 2026 to May 2027, the worker will mainly handle, recover, sort, clean, pack and prepare wool recovered from fresh sheep skins.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Receive and handle fresh sheep skins for the purpose of wool recovery before the skins are salted.
  • Remove or assist with removing wool from fresh sheep skins using approved tools, equipment and workplace procedures.
  • Sort and classify recovered wool according to the wool classer’s instructions, including by colour, length, cleanliness, moisture level, contamination risk and general quality.
  • Place wool into the correct bins, wool packs, containers or storage areas according to grade and production requirements.
  • Prepare wool for packing, pressing, weighing, labelling, storage and dispatch.
  • Assist with wool bale or wool pack preparation, including filling, compacting, sewing or securing packs where required.
  • Record or assist with recording wool batch information, weights, dates, source batches and other traceability details.
  • Keep wool handling areas clean and prevent cross-contamination between wool, salted skins, waste material and other products.
  • Identify and report wool contamination, damaged skins, equipment issues, health and safety risks, or product quality concerns.
  • Follow all workplace hygiene, biosecurity, animal product, export, health and safety, and manual handling procedures.
  • Clean tools, equipment, bins, tables, floors and work areas used in wool recovery and wool handling.
  • Carry out related wool handling and wool preparation tasks as directed by the supervisor.

Pay Rate: NZD$25-NZD$30 per hour

Employment type: Fixed-term full-time seasonal employment from November 2026 to May 2027

Guaranteed hours of work per week: At least 30 hours per week

Requirements for this job:

  • Applicants must have at least 3 months of relevant experience in the same or a similar role. Relevant experience may include wool handling, wool sorting, wool packing, wool recovery, shearing shed work, or similar primary production work.
  • Applicants must be physically fit.
  • No criminal record
