Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Trust is seeking a passionate and experienced

Kaihautū Mātauraka -

Lead Educator to support the delivery and development of high‑quality education programmes at Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre and Māori rock art sites across Ōpihi, South Canterbury.

This role plays a critical part in supporting the Trust’s rock art site protection and management kaupapa by growing awareness and appreciation of the cultural and heritage significance of Ngāi Tahu Māori rock art among ākonga, kaiako, and the wider community.

Ngāi Tahu Māori Rock Art Trust supports Rūnaka and their communities in the care, management, and celebration of mana whenua Māori rock art heritage. Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre welcomes over 1,500 ākonga annually, from early childhood through to tertiary level.

About The Role

As Kaihautū Mātauraka - Lead Educator, you will:

  • Design and lead engaging, curriculum‑based education programmes for all education sectors
  • Deliver hands‑on learning experiences at Te Ana Māori Rock Art Centre, Ōpihi sites, schools, and alternative venues
  • Work closely with kaiako to tailor education experiences, including managing bookings and learning resources
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with kura and kaiako across South Canterbury and adjoining regions
  • Support continuous programme improvement through evaluation and reflective practice
  • Train, mentor, and support Kaiārahi Mātauraka (guide‑educators)
  • Meet Ministry of Education EOTC contract KPIs and prepare regular reports
  • Ensure all kōrero shared is culturally safe, accurate, and aligned with Ngāi Tahu values
  • Support school holiday education activities and wider community engagement
  • Ensure education activities meet health and safety requirements

This is a varied, people‑focused role combining education delivery, relationship building, and programme leadership.

About You

You will bring enthusiasm, creativity, and a strong commitment to kaupapa Māori values. You will ideally have:

  • A passion for Ngāi Tahu history and culture
  • A teaching qualification or experience working with ākonga
  • Confidence engaging and inspiring learners across a wide age range
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Creativity in developing meaningful education experiences
  • A desire to learn and incorporate Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori into your mahi
  • A practical understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused approach
  • Availability to work occasional weekends
