We are looking for a Junior Thai Chef who will be working with our team to produce authentic Thai food.
Requirements
The applicant must have at least one of the following:
At least 6 months of related work experience, such as experience as a chef, cook, or kitchen staff member; or
A relevant NZ Register Level 4 qualification, which may substitute for the required work experience. Overseas qualifications must be comparable to the standard of the New Zealand qualification; or
The National Skill Standard Test Level 1 (Thai Cook) from Thailand.
The applicant must also have knowledge of Thai cooking techniques.
Job Descriptions
Prepare and cook authentic Thai dishes, including curries, stir-fries, soups, salads, rice dishes, noodle dishes, sauces, curry pastes, marinades, entrees, and special menu items.
Plan and organise daily mise en place, including ingredients, sauces, stocks, herbs, spices, meat, seafood, vegetables, rice, and noodles.
Create Thai special menu items when required, including seasonal dishes, promotional dishes, chef’s specials, and customer-requested Thai dishes. This includes planning ingredients, preparation methods, flavour balance, portioning, presentation, and consistency during service.
Estimate food quantities and ingredient requirements and advise the Head Chef or manager when stock needs to be ordered.
Monitor food cost, portion control, ingredient use, and wastage to ensure dishes are prepared efficiently and within the restaurant’s cost-control requirements.
Check the quality, freshness, and suitability of ingredients before use, especially Thai herbs, spices, sauces, curry pastes, seafood, meat, vegetables, and fresh produce.
Monitor the quality, flavour, texture, portion size, temperature, and presentation of dishes at all stages of preparation and service.
Apply authentic Thai cooking techniques, including wok cooking, curry preparation, grilling, steaming, deep-frying, sauce preparation, and balancing Thai flavours.
Discuss food preparation, service timing, dietary requirements, customer requests, and quality issues with the Head Chef, kitchen team, and front-of-house staff.
Demonstrate Thai food preparation and cooking techniques to junior kitchen staff or kitchen hands when required, including portioning, garnishing, safe food handling, and plating standards.
Prepare dishes for dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergy-aware, and different spice levels while maintaining the restaurant’s Thai flavour standards.
Follow and enforce food safety, hygiene, cleaning, storage, labelling, stock rotation, and temperature-control procedures.
Safely operate and clean commercial kitchen equipment, including wok burners, grills, ovens, steamers, fryers, rice cookers, blenders, food processors, and knives.

This is a full-time and permanent position
Wages range from $26 to $40 per hour, depending on your skills and experience, and are paid weekly.
Holiday pay and sick leave will be paid according to the law
You will be working at Unit 5/177 High Street, Christchurch Central City
You will work according to a roster 5 - 6 days each week, with a guarantee of 30 hours (a maximum of 48 hours)
