We are inviting applications from kaimahi interested in stepping into a leadership role of Development Team Leader within Digital. This is a full-time 18-month internal secondment, expected to commence in July/August 2026 and conclude in December 2027.

We would expect this role to have a regular presence on campus.

About the role

The Development Team Leader is responsible for leading and developing a high-performing Development team to deliver secure, high-quality, maintainable, and learner-centred digital products and services.

This role combines people leadership with technical leadership, providing guidance, coaching, and continuous improvement across development practices, standards, and ways of working.

Working closely with stakeholders across Digital and the wider organisation, the Development Team Leader helps ensure the team has the capability, direction, and support needed to successfully deliver on organisational priorities, roadmap commitments, and operational needs.

What you will be doing

  • You will lead the development team by fostering a high-performing, collaborative culture and supporting the growth and capability of developers.
  • You will provide technical leadership and guidance, promoting modern development practices, secure coding standards, and quality engineering principles.
  • You will drive the planning, prioritisation, and delivery of development work, ensuring alignment with business priorities and team capacity.
  • You will contribute to sound technical decision-making by identifying risks, managing trade-offs, and balancing delivery needs with long-term platform sustainability.
  • You will build strong relationships with stakeholders, vendors, and cross-functional teams to ensure successful delivery of high-quality digital products and services.

The ideal candidate will have

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in software development, computer science, information technology, engineering, digital product development or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong people leadership skills, with experience coaching and developing teams.
  • Expertise in modern software engineering practices, including Agile delivery, testing, CI/CD, and secure development.
  • The ability to balance technical quality, delivery priorities, risk management, and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
