Council plays an important role in responding to national legislation and policy changes – this mahi is part of our operating environment and is embedded in our everyday mahi. The current proposals from central government are significant, and Council is working through the opportunities and implications. However, our mahi must continue to deliver our three core services for our partners, communities and te taiao (environment).

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As a Senior Software Developer, you’ll lead the design, development and integration of software solutions that are scalable, secure and easy to maintain. You'll work across the full stack and integration landscape-building APIs, services and automation workflows that connect cloud and on-premise business systems, enabling secure and reliable data exchange across Environment Canterbury.

You will mentor colleagues, promote modern engineering practices and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver digital services that support our strategic goals and community outcomes.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Leading feature development and integration across systems
  • Designing and implementing APIs and microservices using Azure Integration Services (Logic Apps, API Management, Service Bus, Functions)
  • Developing and maintaining secure data exchange and interoperability between applications
  • Coaching and mentoring developers to uplift integration capability
  • Operating and improving production services
  • Championing technical excellence and user-centred design
  • Supporting our Treaty Partner Excellence journey with Ngāi Tahu

Mōu │ About You

You’re an experienced developer with a strong .NET and Azure background, and a passion for building robust, user-focused solutions. You thrive in agile environments and enjoy collaborating across disciplines to deliver meaningful outcomes. You’ll have 5+ years’ experience in integration development, backend, or distributed systems along with hands-on experience with Azure Integration Services (Logic Apps, Service Bus, API Management, Functions) and integrating cloud and on-premise enterprise applications.

Mātau ā-Wheako | Experience

You Will Have

  • Strong proficiency in C#/.NET and Azure
  • Solid understanding of integration patterns
  • Event-driven architecture
  • Messaging and pub/sub
  • API-led integration
  • Data synchronisation and orchestration
  • Experience designing and securing APIs (REST, OAuth2, Azure AD)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git, and DevOps automation
  • Familiarity with data integration and transformation patterns
  • Strong collaboration and mentoring capability
  • A commitment to cultural capability and Treaty partnership

The Following Is Advantageous

  • Experience with React or Angular
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps)
  • Knowledge of NZISM-aligned security controls or enterprise integration governance

Hours of work – Permanent full-time position - From time to time, as required, the role may require work outside of normal work hours for emergency and flood response and to represent Environment Canterbury at meetings and events with partners, other agencies, and the community.

Location - This position is predominantly based at 200 Tuam Street, Christchurch

Salary - The indictive salary range for role is $113,729 to $140,490 per annum depending on skills and experience. The specific salary will be discussed at interview stage.
