Senior Software Engineer - Oracle
Southern Cross Health Insurance
Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand-owned, member-based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do -- delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive.
Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high-performing, values-driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do -- and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.
About The Role
Southern Cross is New Zealand’s largest health insurer, here to help New Zealanders live healthier lives. Our engineering teams build and maintain the systems that make that possible – and we’re looking for 2 x Senior Software Engineers with deep Oracle expertise to join two of our squads.
You'll bring strong Oracle PL/SQL skills, but more than that, you'll be a problem solver: writing clean, maintainable code, contributing to the full delivery cycle, and working as a genuine member of a cross-functional team.
You'll help solve a mix of business and technical challenges – improving the reliability and performance of critical systems, diagnosing and preventing production issues, and delivering new capabilities that support Southern Cross members and employees.
What You'll Be Doing
You'll join one of our product squads and become the go-to person for Oracle development – designing, building and maintaining database solutions, contributing to system enhancements, and owning the resolution of production issues when they arise.
- Designing and developing Oracle database solutions, writing complex PL/SQL procedures, packages, and queries
- Actively participating in agile squad ceremonies
- Actively participating in constructive squad code reviews
- Identifying and resolving production issues, using logging and monitoring tooling to diagnose problems and prevent recurrence
- Contributing to data modelling and design discussions, shaping how we build as well as what we build
- Demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement through incremental enhancements to performance, security, and maintainability
What We're Looking For
We're hiring for strong foundations. If you have the core skills, we can help you grow into the rest.
The Essentials
- 5+ years of hands-on Oracle PL/SQL and SQL development experience, including writing complex procedures, packages, and queries
- An engineer's mindset – you participate in code reviews and think about testability and maintainability as you write
- Experience debugging and resolving production issues in Oracle environments, including root cause analysis and permanent fixes
- Enough data modelling experience to contribute meaningfully to schema design conversations
- A track record of working in agile teams – sprint ceremonies, collaborative delivery, and shared responsibility
- Strong communication skills
Great to have
- Experience with JSON handling and complex data model design
- Familiarity with SQL Server
- Exposure to ETL tools or data integration patterns
- Health insurance or other regulated domain experience
The environment
You'll be working in a modern engineering practice that is continuing to evolve toward a model where engineers are problem solvers first and tool specialists second. Oracle and PL/SQL will be your primary domain, but you'll also have opportunities to broaden your skills through communities of practice and cross-squad collaboration.
Our Oracle database infrastructure is managed by a third-party partner, so you won't be responsible for DBA functions such as backups, patching, or instance management. You're here to build and maintain great software.
Our systems and domain have real depth. There's a lot of existing knowledge in the team and we're committed to giving you a proper onboarding into our environment and domain. We're genuinely committed to setting you up well.
