Business Development Manager

As a Business Development Manager, you will be responsible for developing and managing a portfolio of intermediary partners, driving profitable growth, and identifying new business opportunities across our Commercial and Rural insurance portfolios. You'll build strong relationships, deliver tailored insurance solutions, and work collaboratively across the business to support customer and intermediary success.
What You'll Do
- Develop, manage, and grow a portfolio of intermediary relationships, driving profitable growth, retention, and customer outcomes.
- Identify and secure new business opportunities while maximising growth within existing intermediary partnerships.
- Partner with brokers to understand customer needs and deliver tailored commercial insurance solutions that align with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
- Lead major renewals and complex insurance opportunities, providing innovative solutions that support customer retention and business growth.
- Build and maintain strong internal relationships across underwriting, claims, operations, risk, and distribution teams to deliver seamless customer and intermediary experiences.
- Contribute to regional sales strategies and business plans, supporting revenue growth, market presence, and long-term portfolio performance.
- Monitor portfolio performance, renewal success, and new business activity to achieve growth and profitability objectives.
- Champion digital adoption and process improvements, supporting intermediary partners to leverage new platforms and capabilities.
What You'll Bring
- Proven experience in business development, relationship management, account management, or sales within the general insurance industry.
- Strong understanding of commercial insurance products, underwriting principles, and the broader insurance market.
- Demonstrated success building and managing strategic intermediary, broker, or client relationships that deliver sustainable business growth.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills, with the ability to build credibility and trust with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Strong commercial acumen and the ability to identify opportunities that balance customer needs with profitable business outcomes.
- Experience developing and executing growth strategies, managing portfolios, and achieving sales and retention targets.
- Knowledge of the New Zealand broker market and commercial insurance landscape will be highly regarded.
