We are partnering with the Ministry of Education to recruit Independent Test Administrators (TAs) for the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), an internationally recognised assessment that measures reading literacy achievement among Year 5 students.

This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals who are comfortable in school settings, can use technology confidently, and are able to manage a classroom calmly and professionally while supporting an important educational research project.

About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga

As a Test Administrator, you will be responsible for delivering PIRLS assessments in participating schools. You will receive comprehensive training and support to ensure assessments are administered consistently and professionally.

What's on Offer?

  • Work available nationwide
  • Temporary assignment with part-time, as - needed hours, Monday to Friday (some travel may be required over the weekends)
  • One‑day paid comprehensive training scheduled between 5-14 October 2026, held in Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch.
  • Assessments scheduled between from 19 October 2026 and 4 December 2026
  • $32 per hour, with mileage reimbursement and all travel expenses paid
  • Opportunity to contribute to improving educational outcomes for students across New Zealand

Please note that travel, including overnight stays, may be required depending on school locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer PIRLS assessments in schools according to strict guidelines
  • Supervise students during assessments sessions and maintain a calm classroom environment
  • Set up and operate assessment technology
  • Troubleshoot basic computer, internet, and technical issues
  • Respond confidently to student and school staff queries
  • Ensure assessment materials and participant information remain confidential
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Test Administrators and project staff

About you | Mōhou ake

We're looking for people who are reliable, professional, and passionate about supporting children and education.

You Will Ideally Have

  • Experience managing groups of children or students in a classroom or similar environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence using computers, Microsoft applications, USB devices, and internet browsers
  • Ability to troubleshoot common technology issues
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately
  • A calm and professional approach under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team

Essential Requirements

  • Full New Zealand driver's licence
  • Access to a reliable vehicle that you are willing to use for work travel, with current WOF, registration, and third-party insurance
  • Reasonable level of fitness (ability to carry boxes weighing approximately 10-15kg)
  • Availability for all scheduled training and assessment sessions
  • Legal right to live and work in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Successful applicants will be required to complete Police Vetting and other checks relevant to working with children in school settings.
