This work is critical to protecting public health, supporting environmental outcomes, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
About the role | Ko te mahi nei
As a Sampling Technician, you’ll play an important role supporting drinking water quality monitoring through field and laboratory‑based activities. This role focuses on ensuring water samples are collected, processed, recorded, and managed accurately to support compliance, reporting, and public health outcomes. A substantial part of the position involves field work that requires working alone, sometimes in remote locations. Regular on call work, and work on rostered weekends and public holidays is required.
Working both in the field and the laboratory, you’ll support water quality staff by collecting samples, receiving and logging samples, undertaking field and bench‑based analysis, and ensuring data is accurately captured in line with procedures and standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide a sampling service across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula, with a focus on drinking water, but also including environmental water, stormwater, wastewater, and sewer overflows
- Performing routine field testing for chemical parameters, such as chlorine and pH
- Performing routine microbiological testing in the laboratory, such as E. coli and total coliform testing
- Accurately recording and managing sample data using laboratory or electronic systems
- Ensuring correct sample handling, storage, and chain‑of‑custody requirements are met
- Maintaining laboratory equipment, cleanliness, and readiness
- Supporting internal and external sampling programmes as required
- Assisting with investigation of water quality results and transgressions
- Adhering to all laboratory health, safety, quality, and environmental procedures
- Supporting audits, reporting, and continuous improvement activities
About you | Ko Koe Tēnei
You are detail‑focused, methodical, and comfortable working primarily in the field, but also in a laboratory environment where accuracy and reliability matter. You take pride in following procedures, working safely, and ensuring data and samples are handled correctly.
You’ll bring:
- Experience working in a laboratory, scientific, water quality, or sampling environment
- An understanding of sample handling, testing procedures, and quality standards
- Strong attention to detail and accurate record‑keeping skills
- Confidence using computers and laboratory or database systems
- The ability to work independently while following established protocols
- Good communication skills and a professional, collaborative approach
- Current full drivers licence
Ideally, you’ll also have:
- Experience with drinking water sampling or water quality analysis
- A relevant qualification or training in science, laboratory techniques, or water treatment
- First Aid and health & safety training (or willingness to obtain)
