Our Colleague Digital domain shapes the experiences customers use every day across online and distributed communications. We work across technology and customer experience to deliver simple, secure and reliable journeys. The teams in this area build and support customer-facing applications, shared UI components and the core front-end framework that helps teams deliver consistently and at scale. These are both via SaaS and CoTS solutions as well as bespoke built applications.

The Engineering Lead role offers the chance to combine technical leadership with people management to drive engineering excellence in development teams. By aligning with business goals and focusing on team empowerment and engineering excellence, you'll cultivate a high-performance culture and drive continuous improvement.
This is a permanent, full time opportunity based in Wellington. This is a hybrid working position with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.
What are five day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?
- Technical Alignment: Ensure teams understand the technology strategy and priorities, aligning their efforts to deliver secure, scalable, and high-quality solutions that support business goals.
- People Leadership: Lead Engineers and Quality Analysts through all employee lifecycle stages-attraction, recruitment, onboarding, development, retention, and offboarding. Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, and accountability to drive performance and alignment with business goals.
- Oversight and Standards: Drive engineering excellence across BNZ Technology by enforcing unified standards, focusing on secure coding, automation, and aligning on our approach to ensure quality and reduce technical debt.
- Support and Enablement: Guide teams in problem-solving, promoting innovative approaches for continuous improvement.
- Resource and Capability Planning: Ensure optimal workload distribution and skill alignment to meet both delivery and operational demands effectively across Java and .NET environments.
What is the team culture and environment like?
An experienced and high performing group of engineers, analysts, and tester. You'll be leading two teams, and your leadership peers are strategic thinkers, supportive and diligent in their approach. This is a group of people keen on innovation, who stay cool in a crisis, work across a variety of stacks. Java to .NET and all the necessary wrap around technology.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
The most exciting thing about this role is the variety. Legacy through to cutting edge technology is covered by the two squads. No two days are the same and you get to interface with some great thinkers in the architect teams.
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
One of the most challenging aspects of this role is ensuring teams adhere to unified standards and practices while promoting innovation and continuous improvement. This requires balancing technical oversight with fostering a culture of trust and collaboration. This along with providing depth in People Leadership skills and depth in Technical ability will provide the largest challenges.

This is an opportunity for a strong leader who is skilled in developing and motivating teams for high performance, growth, and collaboration. You will also bring excellent communication demonstrating the ability to convey goals, priorities, and technical requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
What is your management style?
This environment starts from a base of trust and works from there as the benchmark. If you say you will do something it is assumed, you will complete by the date agreed. Micro-management is for teams that don't work in an environment where people have a history of delivery.
What is your favourite thing about working for BNZ?
Working at BNZ means that I get to have a blend of all the latest opportunities in Technology along with keeping my feet on the ground working with legacy applications. If I put the ground work in and do exceptional things this is recognised. Everyone has a voice and is free to express their thoughts. When it comes to agreement though we get behind the decision and drive it to success.
What skills are required for this role?
- Engineering Leadership Experience: Proven ability in leading technology teams, aligning with tech strategy, empowering teams, and adhering to standards.
- Strong Technical Background: In-depth knowledge of Java /Springboot software engineering principles, cloud engineering principles including solution design, development processes, and deployment. An understanding of .Net would also be beneficial.
- Risk and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with security and regulatory practices in banking or similar industries.
- Planning Expertise: Proficiency across planning and delivery, with a record of effective cross-functional collaboration.
