At the heart is our purpose. Taking care of tomorrow: connecting people and place today. This pushes us to do all we can to create a better future for our people, our communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tā mātou arawātea | Our Opportunity

Our teams at Mercury make a real difference to Aotearoa New Zealand by doing new and exciting things with energy, and our Customer business is entering an important next stage of growth and transformation.

As we continue to evolve, we’ve created a number of new roles to strengthen the way our Customer teams are set up for the future. These roles will support clearer accountability, stronger commercial ownership and better alignment across our channels, helping us stay efficient, customer-focused and future-fit.

Reporting to the Chief Customer Officer, we’re now looking for a Head of Sales - Customer to lead and transform Mercury’s direct sales capability across residential and small commercial customers. This is a two-year fixed-term opportunity designed to help us build maturity, simplify the way we work, and shape a sales function that is ready for the future. This is not a steady-state leadership role. You’ll be joining a fast-paced, dynamic environment where your sales leadership and transformation experience will help lift performance, improve customer value, and support Mercury’s broader retail transformation.

You’ll be accountable for leading and executing Mercury’s direct sales capability to deliver our customer strategy and commercial goals. You’ll provide operational leadership across residential and small commercial sales, driving acquisition, cross-sell and retention performance to support sustainable growth, improve customer value and grow market share. This is a rare opportunity to join a great New Zealand brand at a pivotal time for our Customer business. You’ll have the chance to shape the future of sales at Mercury, influence how we serve customers, and help build a function that is focused, efficient and aligned to our strategy. If you’re energised by transformation, motivated by results and ready to help take sales performance to the next level, we’d love to hear from you.

Tāu e mahi ai | What you'll be doing:

  • Lead direct sales and agent resourcing across assisted channels (2 direct reports and approximately 70 indirect reports)
  • Ensure sales motions are data-led, customer-centric and optimised to improve conversion and reduce cost-to-acquire
  • Use CRM, telephony and sales enablement tools to drive consistent, high-quality sales execution across direct customer touchpoints
  • Partner closely with Brand and Marketing, Customer Operations and the Customer Lead Team to drive sales performance
  • Support continuous improvement, capability uplift and operational excellence across the sales function
  • Align sales execution, workforce planning and performance management to Mercury’s customer strategy
  • Deliver measurable outcomes across growth, cost efficiency and customer experience

Tāu ka kawe mai | What you'll bring:

We’re looking for an experienced sales leader who knows how to drive performance through change. You’ll bring strong commercial judgement, a clear focus on outcomes, and the ability to lead teams through transformation while keeping customers at the centre. In addition, we are looking for:

  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, or a related discipline, or equivalent body of knowledge; postgraduate qualifications are desirable.
  • Significant senior leadership experience within direct sales, with accountability for revenue performance across acquisition, cross-sell and retention in residential and small commercial markets.
  • Proven track record leading high-volume, direct sales teams, including outbound, inbound, and field sales channels, with demonstrated success in driving productivity and sales quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrated success implementing sales performance frameworks, workforce optimisation initiatives, and capability uplift programmes that deliver measurable improvement in sales productivity and compliance.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, with experience managing sales cost centres, interpreting performance data, and making evidence-based decisions to drive revenue growth.
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-sensitive sales environments, with a strong understanding of QA frameworks, sales conduct standards, and customer protection obligations.

Tā mātou e tuku nei | We offer:

  • A diverse workplace where your unique abilities and talents will be recognised and encouraged
  • Employee discounts and discounts with our third party providers
  • Annual salary reviews with the option to purchase additional leave
  • The opportunities, career paths and facilities associated with working for one of New Zealand's largest multi-utility providers
  • Flexible working policy - The autonomy and trust to work flexibly from our purpose-built premises and from home, recognising the value of this flexibility in the modern world
