Enterprise Architect
BNZ
Permanent
Here at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
We are looking for an experienced Enterprise Architect to join our Tech Strategy & Architecture team.
This is a rare opportunity to have a significant impact on the organisation by shaping how BNZ engages, communicates and creates value for its customers — aligning business objectives with technology initiatives, improving efficiency, enabling better decision-making, and promoting innovation across our customer-facing platforms and the data that powers them.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with our Head of Architecture, Colleague Enablement & Data and they let us know the following about the role.
What projects / mahi will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?
In this role, you will be actively participating in the broader practice of Technology Strategy & Architecture at BNZ. This includes:
- BNZ Technology Strategy, with a specific focus on transitioning to our target architecture for Customer Engagement and Marketing & Campaign Management platforms, supported by the evolution of our Enterprise Data & Analytics capabilities, within our broader platform-of-platforms model
- Enterprise Architecture rituals and cycles; enterprise portfolio planning aligned to simplification and modernisation road maps and enterprise architecture KPIs and maturity
- Our Customer Engagement change programme, including the implementation of our enterprise orchestration capability and the maturing of next-best-conversation decisioning
- Our Marketing & Campaign Management change programme, with a focus on consolidating fragmented MarTech tooling, lifting campaign effectiveness, and embedding measurable customer outcomes
- Partnering with our Enterprise Data change programme to ensure customer engagement and marketing capabilities are underpinned by trusted, well-governed, fit-for-purpose data and analytics
You will be focusing on maturing our enterprise capability model (BIAN and TRM, in our EAM) and specifically our customer engagement, marketing, and connected customer data viewpoints for the bank. Working with our engineering practice, you will provide guidance and standards across technology delivery for customer-facing platforms. You will also be providing guidance and developing standards with our Digital, Data and Channels teams to ensure our engagement, marketing and supporting data capabilities are fit for purpose, integrated, and built to scale.
What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?
BNZ is investing in enterprise architecture to support our customer engagement ambitions while ensuring strong governance, privacy, ethics, and protection. Key focus areas include:
- Evolving our Customer Engagement architecture toward a real-time, event-driven model, enabling next best conversations at scale across every channel
- Maturing our customer decision hub, marketing automation, and campaign management capabilities — moving from fragmented, batch-driven communications to a consolidated, orchestrated and measurable customer engagement model
- Partnering on the evolution of BNZ Data Hub toward a data mesh-aligned architecture, with modern data products that directly enable smarter customer engagement and marketing outcomes
- Enabling a data-powered, customer-centric future through smarter decisioning, personalisation and AI/ML, while meeting regulatory, privacy and policy requirements
What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?
This role offers broad scope, influence, and complexity. You will need to:
- Ensure customer data, decisioning and engagement governance, privacy and security is at the forefront — with centrally-managed guidelines, standards and patterns that determine how customer data, consents, preferences and interactions will be categorised, managed, discovered and accessed (e.g. data contracts, schemas, interaction history)
- Help articulate the pathway to simplified and modernised target states for Customer Engagement and Marketing & Campaign Management, identifying capability and capacity gaps and incremental steps to achieve business outcomes
- Build on existing reference architectures, finalise the Customer Engagement target architecture and mature the Marketing & Campaign Management target architecture, while contributing to the connected Enterprise Data & Analytics target architecture
- Further develop target state architecture and patterns for real-time and batch engagement planes, including clear boundaries between decisioning and execution, and the operational vs analytical data flows that support them
- Highlight implications for AI/ML in customer engagement and marketing — including personalisation, propensity, next-best-action and responsible use
- Provide input as required to the architectural development of our Customer data assets — this is already underway and has separate oversight due to the different architecture concerns in operational vs analytical environments
What attributes will this person display in order to be successful in this role?
We're looking for someone who has strengths in big picture thinking, communication (verbal and written) and negotiation skills. You will have the ability to*“read the room”*, understand that being a trusted advisor doesn’t always mean your advice will be taken, and you can deal with that appropriately.
You will also need to be comfortable engaging with a wide and diverse array of stakeholders — from senior managers and executives through to marketing, customer, digital, data and technical specialists.
