Enterprise Portfoilo Analyst

Stats NZ

The role | Te tūnga

As an Enterprise Portfolio Analyst, you will play a central role in supporting how Stats NZ plans, prioritises, and governs its enterprise-wide initiatives. Working closely with the broader Enterprise Portfolio Office (EPO), your day-to-day work will focus on turning complex portfolio data into meaningful insights, strengthening governance practices, and building strong relationships across project and leadership teams.

In practice, this role is a mix of analysis, stakeholder engagement, and governance support.

On a day-to-day basis, you will be working across a portfolio of complex initiatives—developing a deep understanding of how projects are performing, how they align to strategy, and where there are risks or opportunities emerging. You will regularly analyse portfolio data, identify patterns and themes in initiative health, and translate this into clear, actionable insights that support investment decisions and prioritisation.

A key part of your role will involve building and maintaining governance dashboards and reports, using tools such as Excel and Power BI. You will take raw data from multiple sources and transform it into high-quality, trusted reporting for senior stakeholders. This includes continuously improving reporting quality, ensuring accuracy, and refining how information is presented to better support decision-making.

You will also work closely with Portfolio Managers and project teams to gather insights, validate information, and understand delivery context. Through open, honest communication, you will build trusted relationships and become a reliable point of contact for portfolio reporting and analysis. This includes engaging with teams on initiative performance, risks, and dependencies, and helping them navigate governance requirements.

As part of the governance function, you will support and contribute to assurance activities across the portfolio. This includes working with initiatives that are subject to health checks, Independent Quality Assurance (IQA), and Gateway reviews, ensuring outputs are reflected in portfolio reporting and informing leadership discussions.

You will actively track and manage portfolio risks and opportunities, ensuring visibility at the enterprise level and helping shape mitigation or response strategies.

The role also involves supporting resource planning and prioritisation, helping the organisation balance competing demands and align investments to strategic priorities.

Beyond core delivery, you will play an important role in continuous improvement—identifying ways to enhance portfolio processes, uplift data quality, and strengthen governance practices. As organisational priorities evolve, you will need to be adaptable and comfortable operating in a changing environment, contributing to change initiatives and supporting others through new ways of working.

Success in this role comes from combining strong analytical capability, technical expertise (Excel and Power BI), and excellent stakeholder engagement skills, alongside the ability to navigate complexity, support governance processes, and drive continuous improvement across the enterprise portfolio.
