Job no: AB7QJ

Category: Research

Take your data storytelling and leadership skills to the next level - help Parliament make sense of complex information with clear, impartial insights.

Te tīma | The Team

Join the Research Services team at the Parliamentary Service | Te Ratonga Whare Pāremata and help deliver impartial research and data to members of Parliament, select committees, and parliamentary agencies. We are a collaborative, customer-focused group committed to supporting a strong, thriving democracy.

Mō te tūnga | About the Role

This is a senior role with a strong leadership dimension. Your primary contribution will be raising the quality and consistency of data insight work across the team — through mentoring, editorial oversight, and working closely with the Research Lead to plan and sequence the work programme.

You will bring enough technical depth in Python (and ideally R) to review methods, test assumptions, and quality-assure others' outputs. But the core of the role is judgement: knowing what good looks like, being able to explain it clearly, and helping others get there.

Ngā haepapa matua | Key Responsibilities

  • Set and uphold editorial and visual standards for data products, including charts, maps, dashboards, and short data briefs
  • Coach and mentor Data Insights Advisers, building capability and best practice
  • Support the development and use of practical tools, templates, and reusable approaches for data analysis, visualisation, and reporting
  • Provide review and quality assurance across data workflows, including methods, code, and outputs — with an eye to where automation and AI can improve how the team works
  • Contribute hands-on to data work where needed — structuring datasets, shaping analysis, and framing findings for non-technical audiences
  • Work closely with the Research Lead to plan, prioritise, and sequence the work programme, and provide light coordination support to maintain delivery momentum and visibility across work

Tō kete | What You Will Bring

  • Demonstrated experience in data visualisation and storytelling, with a strong emphasis on clarity, accuracy, and audience fit
  • Proven ability to coach and mentor others and to improve the quality of their work
  • Good working knowledge of Python, with enough depth to review and quality-assure technical work produced by others; experience with R, SQL, or tools such as Power BI or ArcGIS is an advantage
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work closely with a Research Lead, influence priorities, and collaborate across Parliament
  • Experience planning and delivering work in a fast-paced, responsive environment with competing demands
  • An interest in the responsible use of AI in research or information work
  • Understanding of research, analysis, or service delivery in a parliamentary, public sector, or similarly responsive setting
  • A relevant tertiary qualification
