About The Role
Our Building Control team plays a vital role in creating confidence and certainty for the people who live, work, and use buildings across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt.
We’re seeking a Building Compliance Officer to provide a multi-disciplinary compliance and enforcement service under the Building Act and relevant bylaws. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technical investigation work, problem-solving, and working with building owners and industry professionals to achieve safe and timely outcomes.
In This Role, You Will
- Investigate potentially dangerous, unsafe or insanitary buildings and take appropriate action
- Assess and manage earthquake-prone and unsafe building processes, including issuing notices and updating national registers
- Undertake compliance and enforcement activity across pools, compliance schedules and building warrants of fitness
- Carry out onsite audits of specified systems and follow up outstanding compliance matters
- Respond to customer enquiries and provide clear advice to owners, tenants and industry representatives
- Work closely with internal teams and legal advisors where enforcement action is required
- Contribute to emergency response and post-event building recovery activities when needed
About You
You’re a practical and confident compliance professional who enjoys working with people, applying legislation, and supporting safer building outcomes across the city.
You Will Bring
- Reg 18 or NZQA Level 6 qualification in Building Regulation
- At least 5 years’ experience in building compliance or the building industry
- Knowledge of compliance, investigation or enforcement processes (preferably in the area of local government)
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work constructively with owners, tenants and industry professionals
- Confidence managing multiple priorities with accuracy and good judgement
- A current clean driver’s licence and comfort working out in the community
Essential
- Experience in compliance, law enforcement and/or regulatory investigations
