Senior Data Modeller

AA New Zealand

Working with the AA | Me mahi tahi tatou ki AA

For over 120 years the AA have been helping Kiwis on their adventures! Today, we're one of New Zealand's most respected and trusted brands. From our humble beginnings as a motoring enthusiast's club, the New Zealand AA (Automobile Association) has grown into a large, dynamic organisation offering many services and products to more than a million Members.

And now, we’re building the organisation of the future – more connected, modern, and purpose-driven. We are a business in transformation, with opportunities to work cross-functionally, grow new skills, and make a meaningful impact. We’re investing in our people, platforms, and ways of working to stay ahead of what our Members and customers need.

What You'll Be Doing | Mō te Tūranga

As our Senior Data Modeller, you will define and govern AA’s enterprise data models across multiple business domains, working within the Data Engineering team. Your work will form the foundation of our modern data platform and data warehouse, ensuring data is consistent, trusted, reusable, and scalable across the organisation.

You will take ownership of how data is structured and standardised across the data platform, ensuring consistent and well-defined semantic meaning across domains including membership, motoring, insurance, and finance. Rather than simply producing models, you will define and maintain the modelling standards, patterns, and conformed structures that underpin AA’s data ecosystem, enabling consistent implementation through engineering delivery pipelines.

In This Role You Will

  • Lead the design and governance of conceptual, logical, and physical data models across AA domains, establishing a consistent enterprise data structure.
  • Own and evolve data modelling standards, patterns, and best practices, ensuring consistency across all domains and delivery teams.
  • Define and govern conformed dimensions, canonical data definitions, and shared reference data structures that enable a single source of truth.
  • Collaborate with Data Engineering to ensure models are correctly implemented within Snowflake and dbt-based data pipelines, ensuring alignment between design intent and implementation.
  • Partner with engineering and business stakeholders to translate business concepts and requirements into clear, governed, and reusable data structures.
  • Support and embed strong practices around data quality, metadata management, lineage, and model governance, ensuring models remain trusted and well-managed over time.
  • Act as a trusted authority on data modelling, providing guidance, review, and direction across domains.

About You | Mōu

You are a highly experienced data professional, most likely from a senior data engineering background, with deep expertise in designing and working with large-scale data models in modern cloud environments.

You are motivated by the opportunity to specialise further in data modelling and semantic data design, taking ownership of how enterprise data is structured, standardised, and implemented within production data platforms.

You Will Bring

  • Strong hands-on experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake and dbt, and an understanding of how modelling decisions translate into robust, production-grade data structures.
  • Extensive experience designing conceptual, logical, and physical data models within complex, large-scale data environments.
  • Proven ability to define and govern reusable data models, conformed dimensions, and canonical data structures across multiple business domains.
  • Experience working across complex enterprise domains such as customer, insurance, finance, or operational data, with the ability to identify and standardise common patterns.
  • The ability to translate between business concepts and technical data structures with clarity and precision.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence data design decisions across Data Engineering and business teams.
  • A mindset focused on data consistency, reuse, and long-term scalability of enterprise data assets within engineering-led delivery environments.
