At ASB, our Payments Tribe sits at the heart of how New Zealand moves money. It underpins everything from everyday transactions to complex international and card-based payment journeys.

We are investing heavily in modernising our payments ecosystem, including complex, multi-squad domains such as Cross Border and Cards. This work involves high levels of system integration, external dependencies, and platform transformation.

We have an opportunity for an experienced Engineering Leader to join our Tribe as a Chapter Lead. This role will sit within one of our Payments domains, partnering closely with Product to deliver critical platform outcomes.

Te tūranga | About the role

As a Chapter Lead within the Payments Tribe, you will provide both people and technical leadership across multiple squads, taking accountability for technical delivery outcomes.

You will work in close partnership with Product Owners, driving solution discovery, shaping technical direction, and ensuring delivery of high-quality, scalable systems.

This role operates in a complex, enterprise environment, often involving large-scale modernisation initiatives, external vendors, and highly integrated platforms.

Ngā mahi | What you will do

• Lead high-performing squads
• Partner with Product Owners to co-own delivery outcomes, priorities, and trade-offs
• Drive solution discovery and technical direction across teams
• Coach and develop engineers across capability levels
• Ensure quality, stability, and scalability across critical payment systems
• Set and maintain engineering standards, tooling, and guardrails
• Work across stakeholders and vendors in complex delivery environments
• Support delivery of large-scale platform change and modernisation initiatives
• Lead workforce and capability planning across the domain
• Stay close to technology, contributing to design and delivery where required

With Regards To Background, The Following Capabilities Are Necessary

• Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams or squads within a domain
• Strong software engineering background in complex or large-scale systems
• Demonstrated ownership of technical delivery and outcomes
• Experience partnering closely with Product to discover problems and shape solutions
• Ability to drive technical decision making in ambiguous environments
• Experience working across highly integrated systems and dependencies
• Strong stakeholder management and ability to influence across a matrix organisation

He pai ake | Nice to have

• Experience within payments, banking, or financial services
• Exposure to card payments, cross-border payments, or large-scale platform modernisation
• Experience working with vendor platforms or complex system integrations
• Background in .NET, Azure or similar enterprise technology environments
