About the role | Mō te tūranga:

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee or qualified Phlebotomist to join our Patient Services Department across our Wellington laboratory network in a permanent full-time role.

In this position, you’ll play a vital part in delivering high-quality patient care and specimen collection services, making a meaningful difference across our community.

This role involves working across multiple Wellington collection hubs, providing coverage across our network of clinics as part of a permanent roster. The position requires availability across both weekdays and weekends.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your skills in a supportive, professional team environment while contributing to essential laboratory and patient services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect blood samples from patients in both community and hospital settings.
  • Handle and manage contained biological specimens, including blood, faeces, urine, and tissue, in accordance with safety and compliance standards.
  • Ensure accurate labelling, handling, and transport of patient specimens.
  • Support the processing and testing of specimens within a state-of-the-art medical laboratory.
  • Maintain patient care, confidentiality, and quality standards at all times.

To be successful in this role you will need to:

  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
  • Customer focus and commitment to providing a high quality of service to internal and external customers with effective interpersonal skills.
  • A sound knowledge of medical terminology, laboratory operations including safety, operation of equipment and hands-on practical experience is desirable, but not essential.
  • Diploma in Applied Science, or a Bachelor of Science would be an advantage, but not essential.
  • Registration with the Medical Science Council and an Annual Practising Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician in Patient Services is desirable, but not essential.
  • A valid New Zealand full or restricted driver’s license
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.

If you are not currently registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will support the successful candidate to work towards registration and qualification as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician within two years of employment.

If you are currently working towards your qualification or registration, you will also be considered for this role.
