About the role | Mō te tūranga:
We are currently looking for a motivated, enthusiastic, and skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technician to join our Laboratory team on a permanent, part-time basis.
This role is based at our Oamaru Laboratory and involves participation in a 24/7 rotating roster, including weekend shifts on a rotational basis, working collaboratively within a team and supporting shared responsibilities as required.
You will be willing to learn new skills and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. You are well organised, detail oriented, and approachable, with a strong focus on quality and customer service. A high degree of accuracy and the ability to work autonomously are essential for success in this role.
In this role, you will support the daily operations of the laboratory by performing a range of essential tasks while maintaining high standards and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform venepuncture and collect blood and other specimens safely and accurately.
- Conduct laboratory work, including preparing, sorting, and processing specimens. Including Specimen Reception, Haematology, Chemistry, Blood bank, and Microbiology
- Participate in on-call duties and weekend work as required.
- Accurately enter patient and test information into laboratory systems.
- Answer telephone enquiries and assist clients professionally.
- Manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills and maintain a high degree of accuracy.
- Learn new skills and adapt to changes in procedures and protocols.
- Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Maintain a friendly, customer-focused approach and take initiative in daily tasks.

To be successful in this role, you will need to:
- A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Excellent attention to detail, with good record keeping skills.
- The ability to work independently, while in a supported role.
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technician.
- Flexibility with your working hours will be invaluable to the team.
- A sound knowledge of laboratory operations including safety, operation of equipment and hands-on practical experience in a Laboratory.
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.
