About the Role - Kōrero mō te Tūranga

On Farm Support at MPI helps farmers and growers access the tools, information, support and advice they need to continue to be successful in growing some of the world's best food and fibre.

The On Farm Support team connects MPI, the private sector, and industry organisations, to provide streamlined support and build sustainability practices by:

  • Helping farmers and growers access practical advice through accessible farm advisory and extension services.
  • Collaborating to deliver workshops, training, and resources to promote best practices and encourage the adoption of innovative approaches across the sector.
  • Supporting farmer-led catchment groups to improve farming and environmental outcomes based on catchment priorities.
  • Assisting farmers and growers to build resilience and prepare for adverse events, as well as providing on-the-ground support in times of adverse events such as floods and droughts.
  • Facilitating connections between farmers, scientists, and industry to ensure that the latest research and innovations are accessible and practically applied on farms.
  • Promoting funding and support opportunities

You will be based in existing MPI offices in the region and will have access to a work vehicle.

We will also consider applicants seeking a 4-day working week.

About You – Mōu

To be successful in this position, you will have a broad knowledge of, and natural empathy with, the primary industries.

You will be a good listener who is open to new perspectives and highly skilled in relationship management with a range of external stakeholders. You'll have the ability to work with farmers and growers, to identify challenges, opportunities, and solutions.

You will have:

  • Proven knowledge of New Zealand's agricultural and/or horticultural production systems
  • An ability to foster strong working relationships with people from all parts of an organisation or community
  • Understanding of rural communities, their issues and opportunities
  • A high standard of written and verbal communication, and exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience in communicating complex topics in a way that is impactful and meets audience needs
  • A can-do attitude and be self-motivated and able to work without direct supervision.

You must have a current full New Zealand driver licence (not temporary, learner, or restricted) or equivalent full foreign drivers licence, and any endorsements required for the type of driving you'll be doing.

On Farm Support is part of MPI's Agriculture and Investment Services business unit. We work to create a thriving and sustainable future for farmers, growers, primary industries and rural communities, and caring for the health and wellbeing of animals.

Our people have expertise in regional and community support and development, disaster recovery, and animal health and welfare. We also fund innovation and research – through sector, business, and community partnerships across our food and fibre industries.
