Job Title: Junior Technician

Hours: The position is full-time and at least 30 hours of work is guaranteed per week, additional hours up to 45 per week may be available on occasion
Wage: $28 to $32 per hour
Position Purpose & Core Objectives
The Junior Technician installs, modifies, maintains and repairs electronic instruments and control systems used in residential and commercial settings, and carries out associated testing, calibration and fault-finding work.
The role supports our registered electricians, with work performed in a manner that is safe and consistent with the Electricity Act 1992, the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, and all other applicable New Zealand laws, regulations and standards.
The role does not require, and the appointee is not authorised to carry out, unsupervised prescribed electrical work.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Installing, modifying, maintaining and repairing electronic instruments and control systems, including heat pump and related control units, hot water and heating controllers, ventilation control systems, and timer and sensor devices.
- Installing, commissioning and servicing solar PV system components at the control and monitoring level, including inverters, monitoring units and associated data/communication connections.
- Examining and testing instruments, equipment and control systems to diagnose faults, using test instruments such as multimeters, insulation resistance testers and data loggers.
- Adjusting, repairing and replacing worn or defective components, and calibrating and aligning system components and circuitry to manufacturers' specifications.
- Reassembling, test operating and adjusting equipment following repair or modification.
- Work on extra-low voltage (ELV) fittings and installations, including ELV cabling, data and communications cabling, and ELV control wiring.
- Testing work, and assisting with pre-livening and post-installation testing and verification.
- Isolating and earthing work as permitted, and removal and disposal of disconnected installations, fittings and equipment.
- General operational and maintenance work on equipment, including the cleaning, inspection and mechanical servicing of appliances and equipment, where permitted.
- Assisting with prescribed electrical work strictly in accordance with section 75 of the Electricity Act 1992, under the direct supervision of a registered and licensed electrician authorised to supervise that work.
- Reading, comprehending and working from technical manuals, wiring diagrams, plans and specifications, and assisting in setting out reference points from plans.
- Advising customers and end users on the correct operation of installed instruments, control systems and equipment to prevent malfunction, and dealing professionally with customers in the course of carrying out onsite duties.
- Monitoring and reporting on job and project progress, and providing accurate and on-time job records and other information to the office in line with company procedures.
- Checking the clean, safe and serviceable condition of equipment to be used (such as tools, test instruments, batteries and vehicles) prior to departing the workshop, and reporting malfunctions or arranging servicing.
- Collaborating with registered electricians and other professionals on technical tasks.
- Complying at all times with the company's health and safety rules, including maintaining oversight of safety and good practice on work sites, ensuring your own safety and that of others, and reporting risks, hazards, incidents and accidents to management without delay.
Minimum Requirements
- A qualification at Level 4 or higher in electrical engineering, electronics, instrumentation or a related discipline.
- Working knowledge of New Zealand electrical safety requirements sufficient to operate within prescribed electrical work limitations under supervision (Electricity Act 1992 / Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010)
- Ability to read and work from technical manuals, wiring diagrams and specifications (insight will be tested at interview).
- Good understanding of solar PV systems, including inverters and monitoring equipment, and their troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Competence in the use and calibration of common electrical/electronic test instruments and hand and power tools.
- Clean driving licence (essential, as the role involves travelling to different sites).
- Excellent communication skills and a professional customer-facing manner, as the role involves working in occupied homes and commercial premises.
- Willingness to work outside normal business hours from time to time, based on project requirements.
