About the Company

Freightways Limited is one of New Zealand’s leading listed logistics and information management businesses, operating a portfolio of well-known brands across express package delivery, mail services, and business information management. The Group includes NZ Couriers, Post Haste, NOW Couriers, SUB60, DX Mail, TIMG, and Dataprint, with operations spanning New Zealand and Australia. With a reputation built on operational excellence and a deeply ingrained culture of autonomy, Freightways is at an exciting point in its evolution as it continues to grow in scale, complexity, and corporate maturity.

Role Summary

This is a newly created, permanent role based at Freightways head office in Penrose. Reporting to the GM Mail and Network, the Procurement Manager will establish the Group’s procurement function from scratch, across a significant portfolio of spend spanning NZ and Australian entities. It is a rare greenfield opportunity at a meaningful scale, backed by executive sponsorship and a clear commercial mandate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a fit-for-purpose procurement operating model and governance framework across the Group
  • Develop procurement policies, delegation of financial authority frameworks, and category strategies
  • Lead strategic sourcing initiatives across priority spend categories, including fuel, forklifts, refrigeration, aviation, health and safety, and operational expenditure
  • Deliver measurable cost savings and value improvements, with early targets already identified across 5-6 spend areas
  • Establish supplier segmentation and management frameworks, building accountability and performance metrics across key supplier relationships
  • Lead complex negotiations and contract structuring across long-standing, commercially significant supplier relationships
  • Act as the primary procurement business partner to General Managers and functional leaders across the Group
  • Build procurement capability and commercial thinking across the business through coaching, tools, and stakeholder engagement

Key Skills And Experience Required

  • Proven experience in a complex, multi-site or multi-business procurement environment, with a strong track record of commercial value delivery
  • Demonstrated experience building or significantly transforming a procurement function – greenfield or near-greenfield experience is highly regarded
  • Strong commercial negotiation capability, with experience leading at the table across complex, high-value supplier relationships
  • High EQ and exceptional stakeholder management skills – this is a relationship business, and the ability to extract value without damaging long-standing supplier partnerships is critical
  • Self-directed and comfortable operating with limited infrastructure and in ambiguous environments
  • Experience in freight, logistics, aviation, or similarly operational environments is advantageous
  • Background in a complex corporate or multi-brand is highly regarded
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in procurement, commerce, or a related discipline; CIPS or equivalent preferred but not essential

Why Apply

This is a career-defining role for a commercially driven procurement professional who wants to build something, not just manage it. You will have genuine ownership of a greenfield function with real executive backing, operating across a scale of spend that few NZ procurement roles can match. The autonomy is significant, the stakeholder challenge is real, and the commercial impact will be visible.

Freightways is a business with strong foundations, a recognisable brand portfolio, and a culture that rewards credibility earned through outcomes.

Candidates must hold existing rights to work in New Zealand.
