Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū is one of the most significant institutions within Aotearoa New Zealand's network of galleries and museums, widely regarded for its innovative and engaging exhibition programme and award-winning publications. We are seeking a new curator to join our team.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

Reporting directly to the lead curator, the successful candidate will research, develop and deliver innovative and critically engaged exhibitions that connect with current national and international ideas and practices in art and contemporary culture and have strong audience appeal.

The curator will work within a highly experienced and professional curatorial team and with colleagues across the organisation to ensure that Christchurch Art Gallery is positioned at the leading edge of audience-oriented interpretation, curatorial practice and collection development.

About you | Ko Koe Tēnei

The successful candidate will enjoy working closely and collaboratively with artists and be well-connected across the national visual arts sector. You will bring to the role a real energy and a motivation to explore new directions in curatorial practice.

You’ll hold a relevant tertiary qualification and be able to demonstrate expertise in your field of interest, including a developing track record of high quality exhibitions, spoken presentations and engaging and accessible art writing for publication. You’ll be able to share ideas about art and exhibitions with enthusiasm and expertise, connecting with a variety of audiences, including Māori and Pacific and youth.

  • Hours of work - Fulltime Permanent Position
  • Location - This position is primarily based at 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch
  • Salary - Will be negotiated with the successful applicant - starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
  • Closing Date - 6th July 2026
