Tonkin + Taylor is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead our Health, Safety and Wellbeing function across New Zealand. This is a key leadership role responsible for developing, maintaining and continuously improving our HSW systems, supporting safe work practices, and promoting a positive safety culture across the business.

You will lead a dedicated HSW team, provide trusted advice to senior leaders, project teams, and work with the HSW Management team to ensure our systems remain effective, legally compliant and aligned with ISO standards. This role offers the opportunity to influence safety outcomes across a consulting environment where people, collaboration and practical risk management are at the heart of what we do.

Mō te tūranga / The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and influence Health, Safety and Wellbeing across Tonkin + Taylor New Zealand. Reporting to the Operations Director with a dotted line to the Group H&S Director you will provide strategic leadership and expert guidance to ensure our HSW Management System empowers our people, supports business success, and maintains certification to ISO 45001 and ISO 45003.

Kei te hiahia mātou ki ōu | What you'll be doing

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) systems, processes and assurance activities to meet legislative requirements and support safe work practices.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and development to the HSW team, while partnering with senior leaders, managers and project teams to deliver practical advice, guidance and support.
  • Foster a positive, people-focused HSW culture through effective training, engagement, learning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitoring, reporting and driving HSW performance, including incident management, lessons learned, risk and hazard management, and the implementation of improvement actions.
  • Manage key stakeholder relationships, including external agencies, contractors and suppliers, to ensure strong HSW performance and compliance across the business.

Nā Tōu Rourou / What You’ll Bring

You will be an experienced Health and Safety professional with strong leadership, communication and relationship management skills. You will be confident engaging with people at all levels of the organisation and capable of influencing positive safety outcomes in a collaborative and practical way.

You will bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in Health and Safety working within a similar role.
  • A minimum NEBOSH in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent.
  • Experience with (HIS) Donesafe (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience applying Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) principles and people-centred behavioural safety approaches. i.e. Just Culture or Safety2.
  • Strong people leadership and coaching skills, with experience leading, developing and mentoring a Health and Safety team to deliver high-quality outcomes across the organisation.
  • Excellent facilitation, presentation and written communication skills.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to build trusted relationships.
  • Experience managing H&S systems, incident management, risk management and contractor management.
  • A proactive, organised and solutions-focused approach.
  • Experience within a consulting, professional services or engineering environment is highly desirable, but not essential.
  • A current New Zealand driving licence.
