Senior Technical Specialist

Bank of New Zealand

Remote

Ko mātou tēnei | This is Us

We run and support core messaging platforms at BNZ, with a strong focus on IBM MQ. This role is about owning and improving critical systems that the bank depends on — Not just keeping them running but making them better.

This is a heavily operational environment where stability matters. At the same time, there’s a strong push toward automation, reducing manual effort, and modernising how we deliver and support services.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity based in Wellington. This is a hybrid position with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.

What are the day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Own and support IBM MQ platforms in production.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve incidents across distributed and mainframe environments.
  • Drive automation to reduce manual effort and improve reliability.
  • Work with engineers and product teams to deliver and improve services.
  • Continuously improve platform performance, resilience and supportability.

What skills and experience are required for this role?

  • 4+ years’ experience in the technology industry.
  • Strong hands-on experience with IBM MQ.
  • Exposure to iSeries and/or z/OS environments.
  • Strong Linux and infrastructure fundamentals.
  • Experience working in DevOps / CI/CD environments.
  • Experience with Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform and containers.
  • Strong focus on automation and scripting (Bash, PowerShell, etc.).
  • Experience with AWS (preferred cloud platform).
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals.
  • Experience working in Agile environments with a product mindset.
  • Ability to manage incidents and production issues end-to-end.
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code and modern platform practices.
  • Background in technology operations (monitoring and alerting).
  • Experience delivering small to medium initiatives end-to-end.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Comfortable documenting systems and sharing knowledge.

What attributes will this person display to be successful in this role?

  • Strong automation mindset — Always looking to remove manual work.
  • Comfortable working across both legacy and modern platforms.
  • Take ownership and follow things through to resolution.
  • Pragmatic — focuses on outcomes rather than theory.
  • Curious and proactive — digs into problems and looks for better solutions.
  • Able to build relationships and work effectively across teams.

What should the applicant know before applying?

This is a hands-on engineering role with real accountability. You’ll be expected to own problems, improve systems, and drive automation — not just maintain the status quo.

If most of your experience is GUI-driven operations work rather than scripting and automation, this may not be the right fit.
