The successful candidate will join BNZ's Technology team within the Lending Platforms domain, working across the platforms and integration services that support lending application processing and decisioning for both personal and business customers. The role has a primary focus on Secured Lending. The wider business unit is responsible for the technology that underpins key lending experiences and services for BNZ customers.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Developer to directly contribute to BNZ's growth in key secured lending product segments, while continuing to support existing systems through to decommissioning.

As the team's existing platforms continue through modernisation and retirement, the team plays an important role in ensuring they remain safe, reliable, compliant, and well supported. The role also offers the opportunity to help lead new work as the team transitions to building integrations with BNZ's banking platforms.

This is a 12-month fixed-term role based in Wellington. It is a hybrid role, with three days in the office and two days working flexibly. Anchor days in the office are Tuesday and Thursday.

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?

  • Develop new features and support business-as-usual activities, including designing, coding, implementing new functionality, and enhancing existing application capabilities.

  • Contribute to quality assurance through code reviews and peer collaboration, sharing constructive feedback and working closely with the team to uphold high coding standards and deliver robust, maintainable solutions.

  • Provide production support for new and existing applications by monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving issues in live environments to ensure reliability, performance, and positive user experiences.

  • Mentor and support fellow developers and testers by sharing knowledge, offering guidance, and helping team members grow their technical skills and confidence through coaching and collaboration.

  • Participate in agile ceremonies and continuous improvement activities, including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives, while actively contributing ideas to improve team processes and foster collaboration.

What technical skills and attributes would be advantageous in this role?

  • Strong experience in both software development and enterprise application support, ideally with 6–8+ years' experience in complex environments.

  • Hands-on capability with Java, Spring Boot applications, and APIs, along with experience supporting systems in production.

  • Experience in operational and platform lifecycle work, including patching, upgrades, vulnerability remediation, and production support.

  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, API integration patterns, and security fundamentals such as API gateways, mTLS, JWT, and secure service communication.

  • Experience with CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins, Spinnaker, and Docker, along with monitoring and observability tools like Splunk and Dynatrace.

  • Hands-on experience deploying containerised applications to managed orchestration platforms such as EKS, ECS, or OpenShift.

  • Experience with AI-assisted development workflows and agentic tooling as part of day-to-day engineering practice.

  • Familiarity with asynchronous messaging or event-driven architectures, such as Kafka, MQ, or similar technologies, would be bonus.

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

The candidate will join the team as they are uplifting and extending existing systems to support the business in its mission for growth. They'll be key in integrating with existing systems through the development of API's and other microservices.
