Airfield Safety Officer

  • Position Type: Full-time, with minimum 40 hours per week, fixed term contract for 2 years
  • Work Schedule: Shifts are flexible and based on 40 hours per week across 7 days, with overtime available; rosters are finalised 1 week in advance, shifts are contractor-based and can vary day and night, working some weekends is also required
  • Pay: $28.95 hourly pay rate; Night rates available between midnight and 6.00am will be paid $36.18 per hour; Overtime rate applies for hours in excess of 40 hours per week will be paid $43.42 per hour
  • Assessment Centre: Saturday, 4 July 2026 - You will need to ensure that you are available to attend this Assessment Centre, held at Auckland Airport, before applying. You will also be required to complete a video screening process if longlisted for the role, only shortlisted candidates will be selected to attend the assessment centre

About the role

Are you an operationally focused individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment? Join our Airfield Team as an Airfield Safety Officer (ASO) where you will ensure that the safety of aircraft operations is always maintained, including during Airfield works.

Working in the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of an airport can be truly exciting and the Airfield Team are an essential part of ensuring the safe movement of aircraft, vehicles and people, ensuring civil aviation and health and safety rules are followed, incidents and observations are accurately reported, and issues are resolved effectively.

We have a strong and dedicated team of Airfield Safety Officers led by 3 experienced and passionate Team Leaders.

Your key responsibilities are:

  • Monitoring aviation safety functions: Contribute to works planning and preparation, including establishing work site limitations, ensure that aircraft safety/movement is not compromised by any works airside, and ensure the necessary permits and paperwork have been completed
  • Stakeholder engagement: Coordination and liaison with Airfield Operations, Air Traffic Control and Contractors regarding work areas and any restrictions
  • Safety: Monitor and promote aviation safety and compliance across the airfield, reporting of incidents or non-compliance in accordance with current AIAL processes
  • Biosecurity requirements: Conduct Biosecurity checks, compliance inspections and audits, and airside traffic duties
  • Airside Driving Rules compliance: Monitor airfield driving behaviours of AIAL and other operational staff and contractors, raising Airside Infringements where necessary
  • Operational risk: Ensuring the health and safety of yourself and other persons, whilst ensuring stakeholders comply with policies and standards

What you'll bring to the role

To ensure your success in this role, you will need:

  • Experience: Minimum 1-2 years of work experience or relevant aviation tertiary education completed would be preferred
  • Customer-Centric Attitude: Demonstrate initiative and a can-do attitude with a strong focus on delivering exceptional service
  • Positive Personality: Highly motivated, lively, and outgoing with a positive outlook, excellent Interpersonal skills and strong capability to relate to people from all walks of life
  • Driver's Licence: A full New Zealand driver's licence is required to obtain a Stage 2 Airside Driving Permit (we'll help you get this) as an essential part of the role will be driving on the airfield
  • Aviation Technical knowledge: Previous experience in aviation would be highly valued Reliability and Integrity: Maintain a high standard of reliability and integrity
  • Ability to attend Training for 8-10 weeks at the start of employment to complete trainee course and required sign offs
