Environmental Engineering — AI Data Trainer
About The Role
We're looking for environmental engineering experts to help train and improve the next generation of AI models. Your deep technical knowledge will directly shape how AI reasons through complex problems in water treatment, air quality, remediation, and environmental compliance — making a real-world impact on how AI handles one of the most critical domains in science and engineering.
This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of environmental engineering and cutting-edge AI — no prior AI experience required.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Problems — Create challenging, real-world environmental engineering scenarios spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment systems, hydrology, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA)
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Develop rigorous, step-by-step technical responses including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion simulations that set the benchmark for AI answers
- Audit AI Outputs — Critically evaluate AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and engineering calculations for technical accuracy, safety considerations, and regulatory compliance (e.g., EPA standards, ISO 14001)
- Refine AI Reasoning — Identify flaws in model logic — such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological treatment processes or missed secondary environmental impacts — and provide structured feedback to improve how the model "thinks"
- Improve Model Quality — Work directly on problems that make AI safer, smarter, and more reliable for environmental engineering applications
Who You Are
- Pursuing or holding a Master's or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering (with environmental focus), or a closely related field
- Strong foundational knowledge in one or more of: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, hazardous waste remediation, or EHS compliance
- Able to communicate complex technical and ecological concepts clearly in writing
- Detail-oriented — precise when it comes to unit conversions (e.g., mg/L to ppm), chemical equations, and regulatory logic
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently and asynchronously
- No prior AI experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, data quality review, or evaluation workflows
- Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, MODFLOW, SimaPro)
- Background in environmental consulting, regulatory affairs, or academic research
