This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week.

The remuneration range for this role is $126,322 to $178,337 (including KiwiSaver), depending on skills and experience.

The opportunity

This is your chance to help shape a high-performing internal Project Management function at a pivotal point in its development.

As Team Leader – Project Management, you will provide functional leadership to a team of Project Managers delivering a diverse and growing portfolio of infrastructure projects.

A critical part of your role will be acting as the link between project delivery and programme outcomes — ensuring Programme Managers are supported with well-resourced, high-performing project teams, and that delivery risks, performance insights, and priorities are clearly understood and acted on.

You will play a key role in embedding consistent delivery practices, lifting capability, and ensuring high-quality outcomes across the programme.

  • Alongside leading the function, you will remain hands-on, leading selected complex or high-risk projects and maintaining strong credibility in delivery. Lead a high-performing team of Project Managers, building capability, consistency, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Connect project delivery with programme outcomes, acting as the key interface between Project Managers and Programme Managers.
  • Drive consistent governance, frameworks and best practice across project delivery.
  • Manage the allocation of project resources to balance capability, capacity, and programme priorities.
  • Deliver complex and high-risk projects, ensuring outcomes are achieved across scope, time, cost, quality, and safety.
  • Support project teams with risk management, stakeholder engagement, commercial oversight, and delivery escalations.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to be an experienced project leader who combines strong delivery capability with the ability to lead and influence at a programme level:

  • A tertiary qualification in Project Management, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • A recognised project management certification such as PMP, PRINCE2, or Agile.
  • Proven experience leading Project Managers or technical delivery teams within complex infrastructure environments.
  • Strong knowledge of project governance, delivery frameworks, risk management, and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage stakeholders, consultants, contractors, and community interests across multiple projects.
  • The ability to translate programme priorities into effective delivery outcomes
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills, with a focus on continuous improvement and team development.

Wellington Water Ltd is the professional water services provider across Greater Wellington and South Wairarapa. Our job is to provide safe and healthy drinking water, collect and treat wastewater, and ensure the stormwater network is well managed. We’re a multi-council-owned entity, tasked to manage the infrastructure and deliver water services to our communities. From 1 July 2026, a new chapter in water services begins. Tiaki Wai will take over responsibility for providing Three Waters Services to approximately 433,000 residents across the Wellington metro regions.

Tiaki Wai will own the water assets it operates giving it greater independence to manage and improve water services for current and future communities, Wellington Water employees will transition into this new council-owned entity.
