Our Professional & Technical Services Unit provides specialist in‑house survey, design, environmental planning and project delivery expertise for Council. We are committed to delivering sustainable, resilient, innovative and cost-effective infrastructure solutions while maintaining high professional standards and fostering strong partnerships with our business partners.

The Structural Engineering team supports the Council’s capital programme by delivering high-quality advice and design solutions as well as technical review of internal and external consultant designs.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

This is a senior, hands-on position where you’ll lead the design and delivery of complex structural projects while acting as a trusted advisor across Council. You’ll be responsible for guiding projects from concept through to construction and mentoring engineers across the team. You’ll work across a diverse portfolio including bridges, buildings, pump stations, retaining walls, marine structures and other essential community assets. Your day to day will include:

  • Leading and managing structural engineering projects end-to-end
  • Developing concepts, designs and detailed engineering solutions for Council infrastructure
  • Providing technical oversight, review and sign-off on designs and Producer Statements (PS1 & PS4)
  • Managing consultants, contractors and multi-disciplinary project teams
  • Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners
  • Mentoring and developing intermediate engineers within the team
  • Supporting construction monitoring and ensuring high-quality project delivery

You’re a confident senior engineer who enjoys leading from the front - guiding projects, mentoring others and delivering solutions that balance technical excellence with what communities’ need and value. You bring a collaborative, people-focused approach, building strong relationships, communicating clearly, and creating an environment where others can thrive and do their best work. You will also have:

  • CPEng (Civil – Structural) with strong technical expertise
  • A minimum of 15+ years’ structural engineering experience
  • Proven experience delivering infrastructure and structural design projects
  • Strong knowledge of structural analysis tools (e.g. SpaceGass, SAP2000 or similar)
  • Ability to lead projects, manage stakeholders and communicate effectively
  • Experience mentoring engineers and reviewing technical work

  • Hours of work - 37.5 - 40 hours per week
  • Position - Permanent, full-time
  • Location - This position is primarily based at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices - 53 Hereford Street
  • Salary - The salary band for this position goes from $135,907 to $151,008 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
  • Closing Date - 23/06/2026
