We are looking for an empathetic and capable individual who is committed to supporting the hauora of our ākonga. Manukau Institute of Technology and Unitec has a fixed-term, part-time opportunity (19 hours per week) within the Te Ara Oranga Project, supporting Māori and Pasifika health students in the Tertiary Re-engagement for Health Workforce Pathways programme.

This role has been designed to provide additional support during a period of staff absence, working alongside our existing Hauora Navigator, who remains active in the team.

As a Health Workforce Hauora Navigator (Part-Time, Fixed Term), you will support the delivery of culturally grounded, holistic support to our ākonga. You will work closely with the Project Manager and wider TAO team to contribute to a culturally safe and supportive learning environment.

This is a supporting role, and while confidence in te ao Māori is important, you will be working alongside an experienced Hauora Navigator and therefore are not required to be fluent in te reo Māori or tikanga, but will demonstrate respect, understanding, and a genuine willingness to continue learning.

Key duties this role will be responsible for:

  • Work alongside the Hauora Navigator to assist with Mātauranga Māori and tikanga support, including powhiri and other cultural celebrations and events
  • Work alongside Te Ara Oranga team to identify and support specific spiritual, social, emotional and cultural needs of our ākonga, in relation to their tertiary learning journey.
  • Together with the TAO Health Workforce Transition Co-Ordinator, help lead student engagement activations for Te Ara Oranga.
  • Assist in the maintaiing an updated database of qualified student outcomes, monitoring the transition from graduation into the health work force (noting employment outcomes).
  • Facilitating and co-ordinating hauroa workshops to enhance and promote student wellbeing.

  • Excellent relationship management skills, including experience working with Whanau, Hapu and Iwi
  • Comfortable with Te Reo Māori
  • Knowledge in Tikanga Māori and knowledgeable in Mātauranga Māori
  • Commitment to to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an understanding of how this applies to health and wellbeing services
  • Confidence in connecting and engaging with large groups, hosting student events and workshops
  • Full drivers licence
  • Some knowledge of Pasifika world views an advantage
