New Zealand Customs Service

We’re looking for a dynamic and proactive individual to support our Assistant Comptroller as they lead our newly established National Security and Operational Readiness group.

About this role | M ō t ēnei t ūranga mahi

Supporting one of our Assistant Comptrollers, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the smooth day-to-day operation of the National Security and Operational Readiness (NSOR) group. This Wellington-based role is fast-paced and varied, where no two days are the same.

You’ll manage complex calendars, coordinate travel, prepare key documents, and liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. You’ll also have the opportunity to take ownership of a small portfolio of internal projects.

To be successful in this role, you’ll be highly organised, proactive, and confident managing competing priorities. You’ll build strong, trusted relationships both internally and externally and quickly become the go-to person for your group.

Working as part of a small Executive Assistant team, you’ll also support your colleagues by providing cover when needed. You’ll bring strong attention to detail and a forward-thinking approach, anticipating needs and staying one step ahead.

We’re Looking For Someone Who

  • has experience providing high-level administrative support to senior leaders (including diary and travel management, and event coordination)
  • can manage competing demands with ease
  • demonstrates a high level of integrity and discretion when handling confidential information
  • remains calm under pressure and delivers high-quality work
  • communicates clearly, both written and verbally
  • has an understanding of financial systems and budgets
  • is proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • enjoys contributing to and coordinating team activities
  • can obtain and maintain a ‘Secret’ security clearance (see requirements under Working for Customs)

To work for New Zealand Customs, you must be able to meet the following requirements:

  • Be a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident
  • Be residing in New Zealand at the time of application
  • Have resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 10 years*

Successful applicants are also required to pass a drug test and have a clear Police record.

(*) If you are a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 10 years but have been absent for periods of 6–9 months within that time (preferably in Australia, Canada, the UK, or the USA), you may still meet the requirements for a ‘Secret’ clearance. You will be required to provide overseas Police certificates for these periods spent outside New Zealand.

The base salary range for this role is between $71,677 – $91,877 per annum. The 3.5% KiwiSaver employer contribution is in addition to this. Starting remuneration will depend on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
