Senior Product Manager

PaySauce

PaySauce has been cooking up awesome payroll since 2015. What started as a bold idea has grown into a platform delivering the best payroll solutions for small businesses. With our clever platform and sharp eye for security, compliance and ease of use, we make it easy for employers to manage the human side of business - from digital timesheets and rostering, through to calculating payroll, banking the payments and filing to tax authorities.

We’ve established a strong foundation in New Zealand, becoming a trusted payroll provider for small businesses. Now we’re taking our expertise trans-Tasman, building solutions for Australian micro-businesses where no single end-to-end payroll solutions exist for managing payroll and employees.

We love payroll and people, and we’re revolutionising the way they are looked after: we really care about helping both employers and employees by making the tough things simple and letting them focus on the things that matter. Our goal? Effortless yet flexible. Clever solutions that are intuitive to use and make payroll a beautiful experience.

About the role

This is a hands-on product role at a company in the middle of genuine growth. PaySauce is building a new product across both New Zealand and Australia - replacing a legacy platform that customers love with something even better, and expanding into new markets. This role sits right in the middle of making that happen.

You’ll work as an equal partner with design and development, owning the day-to-day product work that keeps the team moving; requirements that are clear enough to build from, a roadmap that reflects real priorities, and a process that holds shape under pressure. The role sits within a wider product leadership structure, with the Chief Product Officer holding overall strategic direction - your job is to execute well within that and bring others along with you.

You’ll also lead two Product Owners who are payroll experts by background and are growing their product craft. A big part of this role is growing the product function together - creating space for discovery, craft, and validation to become embedded across the team.

Day-to-day, you’ll be keeping the roadmap grounded in real customer problems, protecting sprint integrity in partnership with the development team, communicating clearly across the executive team, CX, and growth functions, and making sure that the customer perspective is genuinely reflected in product decisions.

About the team

The Product team is made up of two product owners - one based in New Zealand, one in Australia - and works closely with a development team in Wellington.

Right now, the team is focused on building out PaySauce’s Australian product foundations, though the work spans both markets, and the New Zealand and Australian customer bases have meaningfully different needs - so there’s real variety in the problems you’ll be working on.

You’ll report to the CTO in the interim while PaySauce searches for a Chief Product Officer, who will take over as your manager. It’s a lean structure, which means real ownership and visibility - you’ll be close to the decisions that matter and working directly with the Executive and Senior Leadership teams from day one.

About you

You’re a product manager who’s comfortable owning the day-to-day in a small, fast-moving team. You’ve worked in SaaS businesses before - ideally ones serving consumers or small businesses - and you know what it takes to keep things moving without sacrificing quality or losing sight of what customers actually need.

You connect product decisions to business strategy from first principles. You don’t just hold the line when pressure arrives; you help the team understand where the line should be and why. You’re commercially minded, with a genuine sense of what customers need and what they’ll value enough to pay for.

You’re calm and credible with stakeholders - you can hold a position without making it personal, and you know how to convert pressure into structured choice rather than ad-hoc reprioritisation. You’re comfortable with ambiguity and can make structured decisions without waiting for perfect conditions. And you’re genuinely interested in bringing others along - finding real satisfaction in seeing the Product Owners develop their craft under your guidance.

Domain experience in FinTech, RegTech, or payroll is a bonus, but it’s not what we’re hiring for first. Strong product experience in a consumer or small business SaaS context matters more. Familiarity with the New Zealand or Australian small business market is great to have, but not essential.

Why you’ll love working at PaySauce

Life is good here with the PayForce. We take care of each other as much as we do our customers: we’re built on being empathetic, kind, and people-first.

We’re committed to supporting your development and ensuring you feel fulfilled and happy at work. We’re dedicated to ensuring everyone feels valued and has a contribution to make to PaySauce’s (very bright) future.

You’ll get health insurance, birthday leave, extra leave if you’re becoming a parent and an invitation to join our employee share scheme. You can ditch the formal office wear - we’re pretty laid back, and the office is fun, friendly and close to shops and cafes. Most importantly, you’ll have an awesome, supportive crew around you in a company that’s really going places.
