We're looking for someone to join us as Mayor's Office Manager. This is a unique opportunity to work at the centre of civic leadership, supporting the Mayor to deliver on priorities that matter to our communities.

This is a fixed term role (to October 2028), and would suit someone who enjoys variety, thrives in a dynamic environment, and can confidently move between strategic thinking, relationship management, leadership and delivery. You'll be a trusted advisor, an effective people leader, and a skilled navigator of complex and often fast-moving issues.

Working closely with the Mayor, elected members, senior leaders, community stakeholders and external partners, you'll play a key role in helping shape conversations, decisions and outcomes that impact the future of Lower Hutt.

About The Role

Reporting to the Head of Democratic & Mayoral Services, you'll lead the day-to-day operation of the Mayor's Office while providing strategic advice and support to the Mayor.

You'll Be Responsible For

  • Leading and developing a small, high-performing Mayor's Office team
  • Providing strategic and tactical advice on emerging issues, opportunities and risks
  • Coordinating and monitoring the delivery of the Mayor's priorities and key initiatives
  • Building trusted relationships with elected members, iwi, government agencies, community leaders and stakeholders
  • Managing complex, sensitive and high-profile issues with professionalism and sound judgement
  • Supporting the Mayor's communications, stakeholder engagement and public profile
  • Anticipating risks and identifying opportunities that help achieve positive outcomes for our city and communities
  • Ensuring the Mayor's Office operates effectively, efficiently and responsively in a fast-paced environment

About You

You'll be politically aware, have sound judgement, be highly organised and comfortable working in an environment where priorities can shift quickly.

You'll Bring

  • Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience providing advice and support to senior leaders, executives or elected representatives
  • The ability to think strategically while maintaining a strong focus on delivery
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience managing competing priorities in a complex environment
  • A calm, professional and adaptable approach when dealing with sensitive issues

Experience in local government, government relations, public affairs, communications, policy or a similar environment will be highly regarded.
