Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity

Reporting to our Estimating Lead, you'll work with a highly competent tendering team who bring a range of experiences and expertise across the Transport and Infrastructure sector. You will be responsible for developing accurate estimates for a variety of bids with a focus on project work and maintenance contracts.

Your focus is to prepare accurate tenders and quotations, ensuring competitiveness within the marketplace whilst enhancing the company's profitability. This will include all aspects of bid pricing including analysis of tender documentation, determination of current market rates for trades and services, asset assessment, identification of subcontractor requirements and first principle pricing.

You will work with the wider tendering team to achieve the above outcomes and ensure compliance with Downer Governance processes and procedures. This will include liaising with internal financial analysts, Business Development and Operational staff to ensure bids are priced in accordance with current operating procedures, market conditions and comply with approval gates, as set by the overarching bid governance.

Upon award of a contract, the Civil Estimator will work closely with Business Development and operational staff to ensure that all pertinent information relating to the bid is transferred in a professional and timely manner.

This is a Full Time, Permanent opportunity preferably based at the Downer Penrose depot, but may also be based in one of the regional depots within the North Island.

Our preferred candidate would have a background in Civil Estimating within Infrastructure, Utilities and Transport sectors with proven commercial and operational experience in a projects environment. This is a "doing" role and experience with proprietary estimating software packages is a must.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Strong industry experience in Infrastructure and Utilities with a good understanding of asset components - relevant site experience will be beneficial
  • Maintenance contract tendering experience is advantageous
  • Experience with an industry proprietary estimating packages (e.g. CANDY, Benchmark)
  • Strong technical understanding of civil construction methodologies
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Strong commercial / numerical and analytical ability with a diligent eye for detail
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the use of "First Principles of Estimating‟ is essential
  • High level negotiation and analytical skills
  • Sound working knowledge of Project Management principles
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and prioritise (time management)
  • Experience in a structured tendering environment
