About the role

ALS Food & Pharmaceutical team operates a modern laboratory in Hamilton that is equipped with the latest in analytical technology.

As a Microbiology Laboratory Technician, you’ll play a key role in supporting operational requirements by preparing/analysing samples, maintaining laboratory equipment, collecting and analysing data, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. This position involves a combination of practical, technical, and administrative duties.

We’re seeking the ability to understand laboratory procedures, exercise independence in tasks, and able to mentor other team members.

We have two full-time opportunities available covering the shift pattern of: Tuesday - Saturday, 9:00AM – 5:30PM.

The Day to Day

The successful applicants will undertake a range of duties including the following:

  • Perform advanced laboratory tests and analytical procedures in accordance with standard operating protocols.
  • Prepare and analyse samples using complex techniques such as spectroscopy, chromatography, PCR etc.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to procedures, equipment, and materials.
  • Able to perform the daily, weekly and monthly maintenance on instrumentation.
  • Collect, interpret and analyse data, to determine trends.
  • Assist in developing and validating new testing methods or procedures.
  • Responsible for compliance with regulatory and safety standards within the team.
  • Ensuring client turnaround times are met
  • Follow all laboratory safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Daily ad hock tasks

The Essentials

The successful candidate will possess the following skills and abilities:

  • Laboratory certificate or qualification in science preferred
  • An understanding of safety precautions necessary while working with samples of unknown hazard
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Involved in daily housekeeping of the laboratory
  • A strong commitment to client service
  • Ability to work well in a team orientated environment
  • Good communication and organisational skills
