About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced orthoptist to join our clinical team. This is a permanent, full-time role (40 hours per week – Monday to Friday and no late nights or weekend work), where the successful candidate will undertake varied orthoptic responsibilities, including working in specialist paediatric, ocular motility, and neuro-ophthalmology clinics. Reporting to the lead ophthalmic technician, you will provide orthoptic assessments and ophthalmic technical assistance to our team of ophthalmologists, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with our team of 20 specialist ophthalmologists, including 4 paediatric ophthalmologists and 2 neuro-ophthalmologists, across our main clinic and outer clinics.
  • Complete evaluations and treatment of adult and paediatric patients with disorders of the visual system, with an emphasis on binocular vision and eye movement disorders, evaluation of need for and fitting of Fresnel and spectacle prisms, convergence exercises, infant vision assessment, retinoscopy, and refraction.
  • Provide technical assistance to ophthalmologists during patient consultations, procedures, and diagnostic tests.
  • Offer education and support to patients and families regarding their eye conditions and treatment options.
  • Potential for involvement in clinical research trials, contributing to advancements in eye care.

Our ideal candidate will have

  • 3 -5 years Orthoptic experience (ideally)
  • Ability to work unsupervised and communicate with people in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Flexibility with working hours.

Essential qualification required

  • Professional Orthoptic qualifications e.g. Bachelor of Science in Orthoptics: BSc (Orth), BMedSci (Orth) and/or Diploma in British Orthoptics (DBO)
