Casting for the role of “Buck” in The Court Theatre’s production of Teenage Dick, directed by Pelenakeke Brown.

Rehearsals generally take place in the Yvette Bromley Rehearsal Room at The Court Theatre, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. There may be half-day Saturday rehearsals. The rehearsal schedule will be finalised later, taking everyone’s needs and the needs of the project into consideration.

About The Play

The high-stakes tragedy and political drama of Shakespeare’s Richard III are transported to the hallways of a contemporary high school in this darkly comedic adaptation. Taunted with the nickname “Dick” and bullied because of his disability, Richard, the play’s brilliant, charismatic anti-hero, is determined to have his revenge, and plots a ruthless path to power in a dramatic student council election. Aided by his quick-witted best friend Buck, he seeks to overthrow the bullish star quarterback Eddie to become student council president while charming the most popular girl in school into being his girlfriend. But as he falls deeper into a pattern of manipulation and greed, Richard is faced with an unexpected choice: Is it better to be feared or loved?

More Information About The Show

Notes on casting

Although some characters are high-school aged, we are casting adults 18+ to play teenagers. Strong comedy and language skills are a plus. Actors of all ethnicities are strongly encouraged to submit.

We also encourage you to submit even if you don’t have much – or even any – professional theatre experience.

Please note, we will be casting an actor with a physical disability (ideally, wheelchair user) for this role.

An intimacy and access facilitator will be engaged for this project (the access facilitator will help liaise and manage access needs and the intimacy coordinator is trained to work with cast and the creative team in ensuring any staging or process that involves intimate work is managed safely, respectfully, and with fully informed consent).

The venue is wheelchair accessible and we will be inclusive of access needs throughout the rehearsal process.

This play really draws me in – it’s dark, funny, and shocking, engaging with familiar high school and Shakespearean stereotypes while also subverting them. I’m really looking forward to finding you, our actors and staging this work, together.

BARBARA ‘BUCK’ BUCKINGHAM

Adult actor 18+ to play 17. Female(Buck is scripted as female, but we are open to exploring a non-binary characterisation). Disabled: wheelchair user. Richard’s best friend and his foil. Earnest but also has a dry sense of humour. She is kind-hearted and chooses to find the positive, believing that you can’t change your circumstances. She is funny and sarcastic like Richard but would rather be loved than feared. She harbors a crush on Eddie and puts up with a lot of his condescending and offensive behaviour. She is a top student and the class TA (Teacher’s Assistant). While outspoken with Richard, she describes herself as shy. We are only looking for wheelchair users for this role. Any ethnicity.
