Emergency Management Advisor
Greater Wellington
We're looking for an Emergency Management Advisor to join the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office's (WREMO) dedicated Business and Development team. This a permanent role, based in our Thorndon office.
About the role
Disasters can't always be prevented, but with the right preparation their impact can be reduced, and communities can recover faster and stronger. While this role contributes to regional readiness and response, its core day-to-day focus is business as usual: planning, reporting and project management within WREMO's Business and Development team.
You will help deliver WREMO's Annual Plan and the Wellington Region Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Group Plan by coordinating planning activity, developing and maintaining plans, supporting progress reporting, preparing governance material, and helping monitor projects and portfolios. Your work will turn information, advice and stakeholder input into clear plans, reports, briefings and practical project actions that support system improvement.
You'll also provide support and advice on local and regional emergency management matters, including strategy and policy, hazard and risk research, relationship management and improvement initiatives across your portfolios. You may be part of WREMO's 24/7 Duty Officer system, and during an emergency you may support local or regional response activities as directed by the Group Controller.
Skills and experience required
- Relevant experience within the CDEM or a similar sector, ideally in a planning, reporting, project coordination or business support role;
- Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear reports, plans, briefings and governance material;
- Experience developing reports that demonstrate progress against plans, strategies, work programmes or project milestones;
- Experience developing, maintaining or supporting plans, strategies, policies or standard operating procedures;
- Demonstrated ability to absorb information, analyse situations, take advice, formulate strategies and plans, then implement and evaluate outcomes;
- Practical project management skills, including planning, monitoring progress, coordinating inputs and supporting delivery on time and to agreed outcomes;
- Success at building effective relationships with staff and key stakeholders designed to harness collaboration;
- A tertiary level qualification in Emergency Management or a related discipline (desirable);
- Capability in te ao Māori in line with Greater Wellington's Māori Capability Framework; and
- Extensive skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite.
What we offer
- Work to suit your life and whānau with our flexible working policy.
- We'll encourage you to grow and prosper with a range of learning and development opportunities, internal secondments and career progression.
- Your wellbeing is our priority - we'll provide medical and trauma insurance, support through our employee assistance programme, including Rongoā Māori partner providers, generous annual and sick leave, along with Tangihanga leave and support.
