Technical Superintendent – TSS Earnslaw

Utilise your marine engineering expertise in one of New Zealand’s most unique and iconic maritime environments. RealNZ is seeking an experienced Technical Superintendent – TSS Earnslaw to lead the technical management, maintenance planning, and operational reliability of the legendary TSS Earnslaw, Frankton Arm Slipway, and Queenstown-based marine assets.

This is a rare opportunity to combine technical leadership, hands-on marine engineering, heritage preservation, and operational excellence while working alongside one of the most recognised steamships in the world.

As our Technical Superintendent – TSS Earnslaw, you’ll play a critical leadership role within our marine division. You’ll oversee annual maintenance and survey programmes, lead engineering standards and compliance, manage contractors and budgets, and support the operational continuity of our Queenstown fleet.

You’ll work closely with the Asset Manager – Marine, Chief Engineer, operational leaders, and external stakeholders to ensure the TSS Earnslaw continues operating safely, reliably, and sustainably while protecting its heritage value for future generations.

This role balances strategic oversight with practical involvement. You’ll provide hands-on marine engineering expertise, support defect resolution and planned maintenance, and when required, supplement the watch bill as Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW), maintaining strong operational familiarity with the vessel and its systems.

As a senior leader within the marine team, you’ll mentor and support engineering staff, contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, and help build capability across the wider maintenance and operational teams.

What We’re Looking For

  • MEC5 qualification or higher (Steam endorsement strongly preferred)
  • Minimum 10 years’ marine engineering experience across maintenance and defect management
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor and develop others
  • Strong understanding of maritime safety, compliance, and engineering standards
  • Financial and commercial acumen, including budget and contractor management
  • Experience managing maintenance programmes and engineering projects
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • A practical, solutions-focused mindset with a passion for continuous improvement

Ideally, You’ll Also Have

  • Experience as a Chief Engineer or Technical Superintendent
  • Familiarity with CMMS platforms such as Maximo
  • Experience with asset lifecycle management and reliability improvement
  • Experience managing end-to-end engineering or maintenance projects
