Project Manager

Transpower

At Transpower, we own and operate New Zealand’s National Grid, the high-voltage transmission network that connects generation with communities across Aotearoa. As the energy sector evolves, we’re enabling a more sustainable, electrified future for New Zealand.

About the team

Our Grid Works Delivery team delivers the projects that keep the National Grid safe, resilient, and fit for the future. We manage a diverse portfolio of CAPEX and OPEX works that support the reliability, resilience, and growth of the grid.

We work across a complex delivery environment, partnering with service providers, consultants, landowners, environmental specialists, and operational teams to deliver infrastructure projects ranging from $50k to over $100 million.

The opportunity

This is a hands-on Project Manager role based in Wellington, Hamilton or Palmerston North, delivering infrastructure projects across New Zealand’s transmission network.

You’ll take ownership of projects end to end – from planning through to delivery and close out – managing scope, programme, budget, risk, quality, and stakeholder relationships in a live operational environment.

A key focus will be delivering projects for the buildings and grounds portfolio that keep critical assets performing. This includes roof replacements, seismic strengthening, fire system upgrades, security fencing, and protective coating programmes.

You’ll be on-site regularly, working closely with contractors and service providers to support delivery, complete quality assurance checks, and ensure safe outcomes. A practical understanding of construction or demolition environments will be beneficial but not essential.

Alongside this, you’ll contribute to broader infrastructure and asset renewal programmes that support New Zealand’s electrification journey.

Your work will include:

  • Planning and coordinating asset outages to enable construction activities
  • Working with our Environment team and stakeholders to ensure consents and regulatory requirements are met
  • Managing contractors and delivery partners across geographically dispersed sites
  • Delivering projects that strengthen and future-proof New Zealand’s electricity network
  • Regional and national travel

About you

You’re an experienced Project Manager who is comfortable working in complex, asset-based environments and takes ownership of delivery. You bring structure to complexity, build strong relationships quickly, and keep delivery moving while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.

To be considered, your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

  • 5+ years’ experience delivering building, construction, or infrastructure projects or programmes
  • Strong capability across planning, budgeting, scheduling, risk, and delivery management
  • Confidence working with contractors, consultants, suppliers, and stakeholders at all levels
  • A strong commitment to health and safety, with sound understanding of legislation and best practice
  • Experience using project, financial, reporting, and document management systems
  • Commercial awareness and contract management capability
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in engineering, project management, or a related field
  • Experience working in high-risk or multi-hazard environments

While not essential, please tell us if you have:

  • Experience leading geographically dispersed delivery teams
    • Seismic strengthening
    • Corrosion control and protective coatings
    • Building refurbishment or restoration
    • Fire and security systems
    • Hazardous materials, including asbestos
    • New Zealand Building Code compliance
  • Project management certification e.g. PMP or equivalent
  • Experience delivering work under NZ3910 (or equivalent) contracts
