Senior Asset Management Specialist - Transportation

Thames-Coromandel District Council

About the role

This is not your typical asset management role. As the Senior Asset Management Specialist – Transportation, you’ll operate as one of our region-wide subject matter experts, helping shape how transport assets are managed across 10 Waikato councils.

Working as part of the RATA (Road Asset Technical Accord) team, you’ll provide trusted technical leadership, advanced data analysis, and strategic insight to improve asset management decision-making at scale. Your work will directly influence how councils plan, invest in, and maintain critical transport infrastructure.

Based at the Co-Lab offices in Lakewood, Cambridge, this role is both collaborative and mobile—partnering closely with councils across the Waikato region. You’ll be employed by Waipā District Council and seconded to Co-Lab to deliver the RATA programme.

In this role, you will:

  • Act as one of the AWM (RAMM) subject matter experts across the region
  • Analyse and translate complex asset data into clear, actionable insights
  • Support councils with forward works programming, valuations, condition data, and asset planning
  • Lead and contribute to data improvement initiatives and system enhancements
  • Build strong, high-trust relationships across multiple councils and stakeholders
  • Share knowledge, mentor others, and lift capability across the region

This is a role where your expertise will be recognised—and your influence will extend well beyond a single organisation.

About you

You’re a highly experienced asset management professional who combines technical depth with strong communication and relationship skills. You’re comfortable working across organisations, influencing decisions, and turning data into meaningful stories.

You’ll bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in Engineering or a related discipline
  • Significant experience (typically 10+ years) in transport asset management and asset information systems
  • Deep expertise in AWM/RAMM database management and associated processes
  • Strong analytical capability, including experience with tools such as Power BI, SQL, Excel, and GIS systems
  • Proven ability to interpret data trends and present insights for decision-making
  • Sound knowledge of NZ transport standards, regulations, and local government practices
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to build trust and collaborate across multiple stakeholders

You’ll also be someone who:

  • Takes a service-oriented, collaborative approach
  • Enjoys sharing knowledge and mentoring others
  • Is proactive, organised, and solutions-focused
  • Thrives in an environment where no two days are the same

Benefits

This is a rare opportunity to work at a regional level, influencing asset management practices across multiple councils while being part of a tight-knit, high-performing specialist team.

Alongside meaningful, impactful work, you’ll enjoy:

  • A supportive and collaborative team environment
  • Genuine commitment to professional development and continuous learning
  • Flexible, mobile working across the Waikato region
  • Staff wellbeing initiatives and a positive workplace culture
  • Benefits including health insurance, life insurance, additional leave, and local discounts
  • Free parking by the Co-Lab office at Lakewood, Cambridge
