Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is seeking a suitably qualified and industry-experienced Networking / Cisco Tutor to join the School of Information Technology. This role supports the delivery of networking courses within the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programme, helping learners develop practical and industry-relevant networking skills across a range of levels.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to applied IT education, preparing students for real-world roles in networking, infrastructure, and cybersecurity.
About the role
As a Networking / Cisco Tutor, you will deliver high-quality teaching and assessment across Levels 5, 6 and 7 within the BIT programme. You will support learners in developing both practical and theoretical networking competencies through lectures, labs, simulations and applied assessments.
You will play an important role in helping students configure, test and troubleshoot network environments using Cisco technologies and other industry-standard tools, while contributing to programme development and continuous improvement.
This position is based at SIT’s Invercargill campus.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver and assess networking courses aligned with BIT programme requirements
- Teach networking concepts including IP addressing, subnetting, routing, switching, VLANs, ACLs, NAT, wireless and WAN technologies
- Support learners in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls and simulated network environments
- Deliver content aligned with Cisco certification pathways (e.g. CCNA-level and above)
- Develop, assess and moderate valid, fair and industry-relevant assessments
- Provide learner support, feedback and academic guidance
- Contribute to programme review, development and continuous improvement
- Maintain currency with networking technologies and industry practices
- Work collaboratively with academic staff and stakeholders
About you
- Relevant qualification in Information Technology, Networking, Computer Science or a related field
- Strong practical networking experience
- Current or recent CCNA certification (or equivalent experience)
- Advanced networking knowledge (CCNP or equivalent) is highly desirable
- Sound knowledge of routing, switching, subnetting, VLANs, ACLs, NAT, WAN, wireless and network security
- Experience using Cisco tools, Packet Tracer or other simulation platforms
- Ability to design and deliver practical lab-based learning and assessments
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Commitment to learner success and culturally responsive teaching practice
- Tertiary teaching experience is desirable but not essential
Desirable experience
- Experience teaching or supporting Cisco-aligned curriculum.
- Experience with Fortinet, firewall configuration or network security appliances.
- Experience developing practical labs, portfolios, scenario reports or technical assessments.
- Experience supporting learners across Level 5, Level 6 and Level 7 study.
- Experience in enterprise networking, systems administration, managed services, network engineering or cybersecurity support.
